Dan Martin takes Volta a Catalunya lead with stage 3 win

by Matt de Neef

Irishman Dan Martin has taken his second win in Etixx-QuickStep colours, attacking on the final slopes of La Molina to win stage 3 of the Volta a Catalunya and move into the overall lead.

Martin made his move with roughly 500m to go in the stage-ending climb, opening up a gap over the likes of Alberto Contador (Tinkoff) and Romain Bardet (Ag2r-La Mondiale) and passing Nairo Quintana (Movistar) who had also been on the attack. Martin maintained an advantage to the line, beating Contador, Bardet and Tejay van Garderen (BMC) by two seconds.

“I am so happy for this win. The guys were incredible!,” Martin said post-race. “Since this morning they said they will ride for me and did a fantastic job. It’s great to see how much confidence they have in me, and this only makes me stronger.

“I knew this finish, and what helped is that it was similar to the one in Valenciana, Alto de Fredes. In the key moments I stayed at the front and I was relaxed all the time. There was some headwind on the climb, so it was important to time the attack to perfection on that steep part of La Molina.”

With four stages remaining in the Volta a Catalunya, Martin leads the general classification by six seconds from Contador and eight seconds from Bardet.

        Excellent post.

  • Michele

Appears as if Greg van Avermaet has taken a leaf out of Kristoff’s play-book and gone with the tilted helmet setup in the hope of victory.
    P.S. I can’t even really see his “shoes”. :)

    • Andy B

Just had that exact thought, those helmets must be hard to wear straight

    • I was literally just saying to Wade: “I’m surprised no one has mentioned GvA’s wonky helmet yet.” Right on cue, Michele. ;)

Im going to miss Alberto when he retires.

    • Yep he’s a superb racer. The greats inspire. He does.

    • Sean

Does it concern you he took contaminated steaks?

  • For those that missed it, Bryan Coquard showed in Dwars door Vlaanderen why you shouldn’t celebrate when the lunge for the line is close.
