Gilbert wins stage at Tour de Luxembourg

by CyclingTips

Phillippe Gilbert won the second stage of the Tour de Luxembourg on a tough uphill finish in Schifflange. That climb saw race leader and Gilbert’s teammate Jempy Drucker crash, losing the race lead. As a result Maurits Lammertink (Roompot – Oranje Peloton) took over the leader’s jersey.

The win comes at a good time for him after a tough spring season. “I am really happy to win especially after a long break and all the problems that I’ve had,” Gilbert said. “It’s an important win for me.”

The main breakaway was always within reach throughout the stage and was caught inside the final 20 kilometers as the peloton prepared for the short but steep 400m climb.

Chaos reigned on the climb with Drucker involved in a crash heading onto the start of the climb.

“I heard on the radio that Jempy had crashed but at this point at the race, there is nothing that you can do to help. We really rode well today as a team so it is disappointing for him.”
