Stage 5 of the Tour of Geelong ranks up there with one of the toughest courses I’ve experienced in Australia.  A lumpy 143km with 6 little pincher hills per lap (18 in total) that sapped the life out of the riders today.  Climb #7 in the profile below was the one where I went KABOOM! Only 52 out of the 145 riders finished the difficult circuit today.  The short but sharp hills and crosswinds blew the peloton to bits after the first of three laps and the remaining riders came past the finish line in dribs and drabs.

Results below as well as some fantastic photos today courtesy of Teri Dodds and Jarrod Partridge and ProCycleImages. Thanks guys!

As always these races start out at a torrid pace. Attack after attack until someone gets away. Photo courtesy of ProCycleImages

Rhys Pollock still in yellow but later cracks.  Photo courtesy Jarrod Partridge

The AIS (Team Jayco Skins) young guns rode superbly today to soften up Pollock after repeatedly attacking him in the hills.

I was chatting with Dylan Newell before the race and he tells me he’s badly out of form.  I wish I could be as “out of form” as Dylan!

Women’s Race

I’m very sorry but I wasn’t there for the women’s race this morning.  I got there just in time to see Jo Hogan smash the feild today and ride across the line solo to become the 2010 Victoria State Champion.  High five Jo! If any women are out there reading and want to send me an account of what happened feel free to email me and I’ll post it.
