Jack McGowan Handicap Race Results, 98km

Carnegie Caulfield Cycling Club, June 25, 2011

The 2011 Jack McGowan Handicap saw a great field assemble to tackle the 98km course in near perfect conditions. Blue skies, a mild 15 degrees and just enough breeze to give the scratchmen hope.

The field of just on 100 riders were divided into 7 bunches. Limit was the smallest group, and were given a 30 minute advantage over the back markers, and 10 minutes to the next group on the road.

The first of the bigger groups were the 16 minute bunch, which included riders with many years of experience including Bruce Will, and it was this group that made the early running, erasing their 4 minute defecit to the 20 minute bunch before Tynong on the opening lap, and sweeping up the outmarkers one kilometre before the first pass of the finish line.

Behind, the 12 minute bunch hadn’t made much headway into their chase, but the 8 minute, 4 minute and Scratch bunches had all worked well and were reducing the time gaps with every pedal stroke.

Seven minutes covered the field at Lonwarry, 10 kilometres into the second lap. The cross wind leg between Longwarry and Tynong saw the 16 minute bunch begin to lose form a little, and shed a few riders, with only 10 still together after the two rises through Garfield. The chasers had merged into two main groups behind them at Tynong, with the combined scratch and 4 minute bunch a little over a minute behind the much bigger 8 and 12 minute pack.

At the final turn at Bayles, the 10 leaders were still 3 minutes clear, with only 10 seconds separating the two main chase groups. It proved to be just enough for the front runners, with the tireless Rob Monk taking the big win in a tight sprint from junior rider Jack French, a couple of lengths ahead of Colin Aitken and Brenton Jukes. Only 57 seconds separated the scratch bunch from the winners at the finish, with Kel Jones (Crino Cycles) holding off a late charge from Jack Cummings (Jayco VIS) and Paul Mason (Charter Mason) for Fastest Time honours.

Thanks as always to the host of volunteers who made today’s race possible, including Warren Howe, Chris Boone, Jason Theobald, Jason Kruger, Adam Versteege, Wade Edwards, Jim Morey, Phil McNeill, Russell Hunt, Mick Day, George Greenall, Con Fotiniotos, Martin Peeters, Virginia Cummings, Michelle Field, Rob Koroknai, Christian Requin, Mick Hollingworth, Monika Imberger, Ann Johnstone, Doug Moody, Matt Wright and Frank Cipriano.
