Philippe Gilbert Winner of 2011 UCI World Tour
During the 5th Forum Peace & Sport that was held in Monaco, on October 27th, the cyclist Philippe Gilbert was awarded winner of UCI WorldTour 2011, by the UCI President Pat McQuaid.
Pat McQuaid: “We are proud to give this trophy to Philippe Gilbert who as achieved an excellent season, in particular is 5 WorldTour victories and a stage win in the Tour de France. The UCI WorldTour is a very high-level competition, with the World’s best riders and the top teams; winning the final ranking is a great performance. I think it’s a great opportunity to organise this ceremony during the Forum of Peace and Sport because sport convey positive messages for the building of sustainable peace in vulnerable communities throughout the world. Philippe Gilbert is a good ambassador at once on his bike and outside of the races. For example, during the Juniors conference organized by the UCI two days before the Road World Championship, we invited Philippe Gilbert to talk to young cyclists. It is important that an athlete knows also how to be a spokesman. ”
Philippe Gilbert explained, “I am very pleased to receive this trophy, this season has been a dream! I started the year with two goals in mind, grab this title of World number one and make great victories in the Classics. Winning this award is the culmination of a great battle. At a point, I was the leader, then Cadel Evans passed me after his victory in the Tour de France and finally thanks to my victory in Canada, I assured my leading position in the ranking. So I have achieved my goals this year, with my three successive victories in Ardennes and also with some nice surprises, such as my stage victory in the Tour de France, near my hometown in Liege. This victory allowed me to wear the yellow jersey and my title of Belgian Champion which will be a good motivation at the beginning of next season. The year 2011 will be an unforgettable season, full of successes and surprises! “
