I’ve come to Sydney for a couple days and couldn’t resist bringing the bike. John Sunde, Sydney’s undisputed “Patron of the Peloton” (shown above with my mate Andy) took us out on the Colluzi/Latteria ride and showed us the local scene.
Judging by this brief introduction, the Sydney cycling culture couldn’t be more different than Melbourne’s. Firstly, the bunch I joined had nice civil coffee before the ride at 6am and didn’t get rolling until about 6:30. Once we got rolling there was nobody attacking the bunch every 30 seconds, no one swarming and drafting cars, and definitely on one taking up two lanes of the road. There were designated sections where people swapped off turns on the front and everyone rode two by two.
The reason? Because of the John, the Patron of the Peloton, the Captain of the Bunch. Get out of line and you’ll quickly know about it.
