Media Release

Cycling NSW and Santos today announced in Narrabri, NSW plans to host a major Road Cycling Tour in NSW from the 21st to the 24th June 2012. From 2013 onwards the tour will be staged in early April.

The tour “Santos North Western Tour” will start in Narrabri and finish in Tamworth, North Western NSW.

Santos is the major sponsor of the hugely successful Santos Tour Down Under UCI WorldTour professional road cycling event that attracts many of the world’s best road cyclists to Adelaide during January each year. Riders of the calibre of Lance Armstrong, Stuart O’Grady, Cadel Evans (2010), Allessandro Pettachi, CJ Sutton and Mark Renshaw as well as many other International cycling stars.

Cycling NSW CEO, Kevin Young says having Santos on board as the major sponsor for this NSW North Western Tour will attract Australia’s best National Road Series teams to the tour that will showcase our regional centres of Narrabri, Coonabarabran, Gunnedah and Tamworth as travel destinations for tourists as well as incorporating landmarks such as the ANU Siding Springs Observatory which will host a stage finish and depart for next year’s tour.  The Santos North Western Tour is to be staged over 4 days (initially) and is expected to generate hundreds of thousands of dollars of economic benefit for the region.

Santos Principal Adviser Public Affairs Sam Crafter said Santos was pleased expand its support for cycling in New South Wales, reflecting the company’s growing presence in the region.

“The Santos North Western Tour builds on our existing sponsorship of the Keegan Downes Memorial Sundowner in Gunnedah to create an exciting regional tour throughout the communities where we live and work in New South Wales. This partnership reflects Santos’ commitment to investing in New South Wales’ regional communities,” Mr Crafter said.

The Santos North Western Tour will become Cycling NSW’s “blue ribbon” road cycling tour in NSW with the aim in 2013 of it becoming one of Australia’s premier National Road Series Tour calendar events.

The differentiating factor between the Santos North Western Tour and other existing National Road Series Tour events  in Australia is that the Santos North Western Tour will cater for both Men’s and Women’s teams which supports Cycling NSW’s current strategy focused around developing women’s cycling in NSW and Australia.
