Footscray CC VUT Criteriums – 3 Dec 2011
The Footscray Cycling Club’s criterium racing, held at the Victoria University Driver Training circuit in Hopper’s Crossing on Saturday, saw a welcome return to racing after a number of washouts recently. In A-Grade’s race, 36 year old Hoppers Crossing resident Paul Anders made a daring break to take a well-deserved win. Anders spoke of how he thought the bunch had blown the race early on; ‘The three strongest riders in the race got away at the start and I thought it was pretty much over, but the bunch kept a pretty even tempo and caught them. The bunch then split a few times and I thought with about 10 minutes to go that it was the right time to go and I managed to just hold on.’ Anders put the hammer down and was either going to win or blow up trying; Anders spending 7 long laps on his own trying to hold the bunch at bay. The chasing bunch, headed by Chris Munro, tried to swamp Anders before the line, but Anders dug deep and ignored the burning legs and screaming lungs to finish a few bike lengths clear of Dom Dudkiewicz and Geordie Probert. B-Grade’s race came down to a sprint, after many failed attempts by various riders to break away; Les Kennett showing the bunch that big guys can sprint and earning himself a spot in A-Grade next week. C-Grade’s race was taken in a bunch sprint by veteran racer David ‘the smiling assassin’ Danson, with D-Grade’s sprint taken by the ever-improving Luke Jaques and E-Grade’s sprint by soon to be D-Grader Paul Portelli.
