I know that I feature a disproportionate number of Darren Baum’s bikes here on Bikes of the Bunch, but I simply can’t help myself. This one is a standard titanium Corretto with a twist…
One of my jobs with Rapha is to partner with local handmade bike builders whose bikes can be featured in the Continental films. I’ve been mates with Darren Baum for a few years now, I absolutely love his work, and there’s little doubt that his bikes are among the nicest in the handbuilt community. It was a natural fit.
I see it in his eyes. Darren gets excited about every bike he builds as he begins imagining the endless possibilities of the various paint schemes. Darren is an engineer at heart and his brain is most definitely left side dominant. He has a great eye to know exactly what looks good, but his painter Nate and others are the creative geniuses behind many of the color palets and designs. In this work of art, they managed to place some La Gazzetta tissue paper underneath the clear coat of paint within the framework of their style.
Make sure you head over to the Australian Custom Bicycle Show this weekend where you’ll see all the Australian handmade bike builders in one place.Tomorrow night there will be an intimate “Meet the Maker” with Darrell McCulloch (Llewellyn) and Darren Baum (Baum Cycles).
This bike is equipped with 2012 SRAM Red, ENVE Smart 3.4 clinchers, Fizik saddle and bartape made by Busyman Bicycles, and 3T bar and stem. All up, it weights 7kg without even trying.
