Minister for Sport Kate Lundy today released the independent review into Cycling Australia conducted by the Hon James Wood AO QC.
Senator Lundy announced the review in November last year to protect the integrity of the sport in Australia following the resignations of Cycling Australia officials previously involved in doping.
“The Gillard Government acted quickly to restore confidence in the community and established the independent review to safeguard the future of cycling in Australia,” Senator Lundy said.
“Last year’s revelations of sophisticated doping programs in elite international cycling and admissions of previous doping activity by leading Australian cycling officials sent shockwaves through our cycling and broader sporting communities.
“Mr Wood’s review provides 16 wide-ranging recommendations for Cycling Australia to improve its anti-doping and governance practices, identify past or present doping activities, educate young cyclists and ensure high standards of integrity in the sport.
“The focus complements the existing work of the Australian Sports Commission on improving governance across all sports and is consistent with the Winning Edge strategy I recently announced.”
Some of the key recommendations include:
· Upgrading governance structures;
· Building anti-doping accountability and networks;
· Establishing an ethics and integrity panel;
· Improving anti-doping education;
· Extending the reach of testing; and
· Developing stronger sanction regimes.
Senator Lundy thanked Mr Wood for undertaking the review and said the Government will consider all of the recommendations in full before responding.
