Stage 12 of the Vuelta a España has been run and won and the results are now in for our Vuelta tipping competition. Byron Davy from gives us the latest.

Well today’s stage was special for two reasons: 1) Gilbert finally won something meaningful in his world championship year and 2) Carlton Kirby and Sean Kelly were back in the commentary booth calling the action. Best for all involved really.

Again the Higgs Boson particle (Edvald Boassen Hagen) tried to breakaway from the peloton in the death throes of the race but the poor bloke can’t run away from the fact that he is constrained by theories of quantum physics. Gilbert, ever the rational scientist, proved that theory right once again and took a fantastic victory.

Chapeau Philippe!

Who tipped whom?

Tips were fairly evenly spread across several riders with the following three riders garnering more than 20 tips:

  • Edvald Boasson Hagen: 29 tips
  • Maximiliano Ariel Richeze: 27 tips
  • Tyler Farrar: 22 tips

The experts

TheInnerRing, who has been tipping so well, finally laid an egg today by selecting Michael Matthews. Luckily for him it was a flat stage and he didn’t lose too much time. VeloTipper’s Goon was on Tyler Farrar and should know better. He is forgiven for being American and only knowing the name of US riders. USA USA USA!

The stage winners

Only eight people selected Gilbert and they were: Colin Loo, Geoff Vickers, Dan Collins, Marek Leniec, Feargal Owens, Elliot Ashby, Tyson Beswick and Derek Clarke.

Egg of the Day goes to Michael Matthews who burnt 22 tippers by losing 5 minutes as a favourite for the day. Maybe his young legs are beginning to fatigue?

The leaders

Brad Stephens, with a solid pick of Boassen Hagen holds onto the Red Jersey once again, with Olly Harris still lurking in second and Cristiano Barbosa sitting in third.

Top ten:

  1. Brad Stephens
  2. Olly Harris
  3. Cristiano Barbosa
  4. Derek Clarke
  5. Scott Weston
  6. Chris Seglenieke
  7. Jeremy Smith
  8. Jackson Ankers
  9. James Colasante
  10. Dan Collins

Scott Weston has solidified his lead in the sprint classification with 177 points and now sits seven points clear of Brad Stephens.

There was no change in the KOM classification with Jim Humphrys still in the leaders jersey on 19 points.

Looking forward

There are a couple of small lumps coming out of Tarragona on tonight’s stage though it is the ascent up the Rat Penat that is going to cause the problems. The Intern at VeloTipper has ridden this climb and it is a nasty, narrow climb that, once completed, descends down to a flat open coast.

Basically if you aren’t back onto the bunch at the bottom of the climb your stage is over. There could be a bit of carnage today before a welcome night of drinking punch on the La Rambla in Barcelona. Today is the day for the sprinters who have that hardness in their legs.
