Stage nine of the Vuelta a España has been run and won and the results are now in for our Vuelta tipping competition. Tim Calkins from gives us the latest.

While today’s stage had My Humps everyone was really hanging out for the final glory climb coming into Jaen. It was a finale that favoured the explosive climbers. Think Bettini … well, say, 8 years ago.

The Higgs Boson particle (Edvald Boassen Hagen) broke away from the peloton atom late in the race but the laws of physics demanded singularity (is this right? I’m not a physicist) and so it again became one with 2km to go. (Quick gag: A Higgs boson and a quark walk into the bar at CERN. The barman says “oh, smashing”.)

With about 500m to go Moreno went hard and only Valverde could really go with him while teammate Rodriguez kept a lid on it. But nothing was going to stop Moreno taking a fantastic win. This man currently has the form of his life. Can he hold it for another two weeks?

Who tipped whom?

Moreno was the most tipped rider with 45 tippers! The man is in super form which few have failed to notice.

Rider | Number of tips

  • Daniel Moreno Fernandez | 45
  • Sammy Sanchez | 26
  • Joaquim Rodriguez Oliver | 24
  • Alejandro Valverde | 21
  • Nicolas Roche | 16
  • Phillipe Gilbert | 15
  • Vincenzo Nibali | 8

The experts

The top 10 was peppered with Moreno picks. These guys aren’t at the top out of luck. CyclingTips made a gutsy pick for Gilbert who finished in the mix. The InnerRing and Goon from VeloTipper both backed the winner in Moreno!

The stage winners

Some 45 of you picked the winner. This would be close to a record for most stage winner except for, say, a stage won by Cavendish.

Not many particular eggs (poor performances) on today’s stage. We had the regular Matthews pick and a couple of Ab Fab Cancellara but today was decidedly omelette free. Look for this to significantly change tomorrow …

The leaders

And again we have another leader! Jackson Ankers lost time with Majka and now Olly Harris moves into the hot seat! Brad Stephens moves into second and InnerRing is now third.

Top Ten

  1. Olly Harris
  2. Brad Stephens
  3. inrng .com
  4. Derek Clarke
  5. Scott Weston
  6. Dan Collins
  7. Dom Geoghegan
  8. James Colasante
  9. Aaron Percival
  10. Chris Seglenieke

Stephen Heslop has jumped into the Sprint lead with 123 points with only a 5 point gap over Darren Cathie.

The KOM was a non-event with only a single categorised climb but it was enough for Evan Dix to jump into the lead with 15 points.

Looking forward

I love the Vuelta. To quote verbatim from the Vuelta’s website “This is the first mountain stage of this year’s Vuelta.” Aye carumba! There are two molto nasty climbs today, the Alto Hazallanas and the Monachil climb, which both have ramps that are going to sap the legs. The final ascent up the Hazallanas will see some fireworks with a rest day to follow. Tomorrow is a day for the heavyhitters.
