Photo gallery: a snow-affected stage 5 of Tirreno-Adriatico

While Australia’s Richie Porte (Sky) was busy winning his second Paris-Nice title on the Col d’Eze yesterday, over in Italy Nairo Quintana (Movistar) was taking control of the 2015 Tirreno-Adriatico.

Last year’s Giro d’Italia winner pounced on the slopes of the final climb to Terminillo, riding away to win stage 5 and take the overall lead. With a lead of 39 seconds and only two stages to go — a road stage with a flat finish and a short, pan-flat ITT — Quintana’s stage win yesterday should be enough to secure the overall victory.

But stage 5 of the 2015 Tirreno-Adriatico will be remembered for more than just Quintana’s late attack. Like Milan-San Remo of 2013 and “the Stelvio stage” of last year’s Giro d’Italia — which Quintana also won — yesterday’s stage of Tirreno-Adriatico was affected by heavy snow.

This video from LottoNL-Jumbo director sportif Nico Verhoeven, featuring Laurens Ten Dam, gives you an idea of the conditions the riders faced:
