Ally Stacher launched Ally’s Bar 16 months ago. Her business was born out of a personal need. Ally is not a fan of gels and other processed pocket foods most cyclists eat. She wanted to eat real food while she raced and train. She experimented with all sorts of options (cuts of chicken, dehydrated fruit, trail mix) before settling on sweet potato as her bike food of choice. The only problem was that sweet potatoes don’t exactly transport easily.
So Ally solved the problem by concocting a bar with a sweet potato base. She adds dates, quinoa, nuts, berries and Agave and coconut sweeteners. She tested the bars out on her teammates, and when they were clamouring for more, she knew she had a hit on her hand. As the requests for Ally’s Bars outgrow her kitchen, Ally made the decision to shift her focus to her business full-time. She retired from road racing (but still mountain bikes professionally) and set out to grow Ally’s Bar.
All of which is to say – Ally know her way around the kitchen. And she REALLY knows her way around a juicer. In fact, when I first met Ally, she was lamenting the death of her travel juicer – that she carts around with her when she’s racing away from home.

This drink is really delightful. This greenish drink is super crisp and refreshing, so it’s great on a hot day. Plus celery and cucumber have natural sodium in them, which are much needed for the body especially as the weather warms up.
Now for some fun facts about each of these ingredients.
Lets start with the cucumber! Cucumber comes from the same family as watermelon, zucchini and other squash. This is one of my all-time favourite vegetables. This crispy vegetable has an impressive amount of water (about 96%) that is naturally distilled making it superior to ordinary water. It contains alkaline-forming minerals, and is an excellent source of vitamins C and A along with other metals and sodium. If it’s a hot day this is a must add to your juice and will help with normalizing your body temperature.
Celery has a high content of vitamin A, B1, B2, B6 and C. Along with a rich source of potassium, folate, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, sodium, and plenty of essential amino acids. The natural sodium in celery is an essential for the body. The sodium you get from celery is not remotely comparable with table salt. The body craves this natural sodium profile. While many foods lose nutrients during cooking, most of the compounds in celery hold up well to heat.
Carrots! I use carrots a lot for my filler. They are cheap and easy. All you have to do is rinse them and bam there you go. It’s an easy to manage, cheap, juicy, and extremely tasty ingredient. This great glass filler provides some of the highest quality nutrients. It has an excellent source of pro-vitamin A, vitamins C, D, E, K, B1, and B6. I can go on about carrots but let’s keep moving….
My last ingredient is the herb dill. Yep I said it. Dill. This beneficial herb is packed with nutritional benefits. The vitamins found in this powerful herb are vitamin A and C as well as folate, iron, and manganese. Some of the health benefits are it aids in digestion, and it is a great sleep aid. The essential oils found in dill activate a calming effect on the body, thereby will help you calm the body and get a good night’s rest.
