Will ride for coffee: tips on how to become a morning person

Apologies for the tardiness of this post, I pressed snooze a couple times too many. Early mornings and late nights, are catching up on me.

Not many people are granted the luxury of pro hour riding. I, like many people who work 9-5, fit my riding in before work. That means an early start.

Getting up early every day is hard, especially when you have to cram a lot into your day. I’m relatively used to it now though I do at times struggle a bit with the cold and the snooze button.

Before I started riding, I was never a morning person. I really, really struggled to get out of bed before 7 a.m. Now, the alarm goes off at 5 a.m. and I’m showered and at my desk by 8:30 a.m.

My mornings go something like this:

5:00 a.m. – alarm goes off. I turn the light on, press snooze.
5:09 a.m. – alarm goes off. I should really get up. My partner is already up but I’m paralysed.
5:18 a.m. – alarm goes off. I launch myself out of bed, put my kit on, brush teeth.
5:23 a.m. – I eat a quick snack while I’m rushing around
5:25 a.m. – I carry bike down stairs and I’m off to training

So how did become a morning person? Practice – that’s how. Here are my tips to make getting up at 5 a.m. somehwat easier:

  • Start a routine. Getting up at the same time every day will set your body clock right.
  • Force yourself out of bed. Whether you put your alarm across the room, or get out of bed to have to turn the light on – it will wake you up a little.
  • Set a second alarm. This will mean that you have no chance of turning the alarm off by accident and rolling over back to sleep.
  • Have your partner/pet wake you up. I’ll often have my partner push me out of bed so that I don’t press snooze – but at least I’m up.
  • Go to bed at a reasonable time. If you know you require a solid eight hours of sleep make sure you go to bed early enough to get this.
  • Be organised in the morning. Have your stuff ready to go the night before, so that all you need to do put your kit on and go.
  • Make social commitments. Arrange to meet your friends early to ride, this means that you have added motivation to get up to ride! You can’t let them down, can you?
  • Ride for coffee. Reward yourself with an after-ride coffee and moment of quiet before rushing into work.

There are many benefits to riding in the early morning. You often beat the peak hour traffic, you have your training done while still having the whole day ahead of you, and you get to ride the wave of endorphins – at least until 11 a.m.!

Being a morning person is really about practice and habit, the more you force yourself to get up early, the easier it gets. Your body will start to learn that this is what you do and before you know it, you will be that morning person. Now, I still have those fails – when I turn my alarm off instead of pressing snooze or i’m just too tired to get up and sleep in. But that’s life and I take each day as it comes.
