“The race jury deemed that Debusschere had veered from his line and thus gave the victory to Golas”

And he flicked his right elbow into Groenewegen which pushed him into the barriers resulting in a broken patella. So it’s only relegation he gets?

    • Sean Doyle

Freakin hell. What a knob that guy is. I don’t imagine Debusschere will have a calm ride in the bunch for a while.

    • Michele

Without playing devil’s advocate here .. the rules have no provision to factor in injury into the punishment. Maybe they should?? How would you do it though? What penalty would be appropriate for this:

Cavendish and Haussler [and Boonen] from 2010 Tour de Suisse … The penalty [bearing in mind it was a multi-stage race]:

Cavendish is being sanctioned 25 points in the sprinter competition and 30 seconds on the general classification. He also is being fined 200 Swiss francs.

That cost HH the rest of his 2010 season. It also derailed Boonen’s season.

But Sean’s comment above highlights that the relegation isn’t the only ‘punishment’ he’ll receive – the peloton has a strange way of sorting these things out.

        How about 12.1.004 (3):
If grave or urgent circumstances justify it in the interests of cycling, the president of the UCI, or, in his absence, a vice-president, may provisionally suspend any licence-holder.
Within eight days of receiving the UCI President’s decision, the interested party may submit an appeal to CAS. This appeal shall not suspend the execution of the UCI President’s decision.

Other applicable rules could be 12.1.006 (1)
Any form of fraud not specifically penalised by a particular provision of the UCI Regulations shall be penalised as follows:
        1. Licence-holder (except organiser): suspension of between one month and one year and a fine of between CHF 200 and CHF 10,000;

        Or 12.1.039…
Notwithstanding the penalties as listed hereunder, the licensee who commits a serious fault, may immediately be disqualified by a commissaire.
If the race incident is a behaviour which harms the image, the reputation or the interests of cycling or the UCI, the licensee will also be summoned in front of the Disciplinary Commission and penalised according to article 12.1.005.2.

I’ve always thought that certain punishments should be in terms of racing days – but with a racing day only being served when the rider is selected for a race, the team then having to be a man down for that race (or avoid selecting him to retain a full complement) as a punishment for tolerating the rider’s behaviour. Many of these teams could take even a 10000CHF fine without blinking an eye (let alone a 200CHF slap on the wrist which would only pay for a couple of race tyres) but punishing them on the road will genuinely hurt them.

    • just another sprinter

Even tough he caused him to crash with his elbow flick I think
Groenewegen is to blame here. The footage is a bit too short but you can
see that Debusschere was sprinting on the far right side (right next to
the barriers) – so as a sprinter you should see that he won’t let you
trough there because he won’t veer away. Groenewegen pushed in anyway and if Debusschere would have stayed there and done nothing the would have probably both crashed. Better seen from the behind footage.

I can understand that he defended his spot and the better move would have been to veer off to left (just a little) – he looked the strongest anyway. Its really unfortunate that this has caused Groenewegen such a bad injury.

TTT is such a beautiful discipline.

    • mighty ducks

Have any TTT teams ever tried riding in a V formation (like ducks and geese do)?

      • jon

Only during the brief moment of rotation will a team looks like flying in V-formation, or when the team line up pushing for the finish line.

        • Dave

Could work for OGE if Jonesy was on the front.

  • Michele

Would be interesting to know the context/background to that Museeuw photo?
Everyone seems to be so happy in that shot.

    • jules

dunno but agree with Museeuw, as per Lance – picking someone to be scapegoat for systemic doping is wrong.

      • Michele

Yep – there are some who have only just recently retired following a highly celebrated career and now have a comfortable gig doing tv special comments.
Of course, I’m not suggesting they doped – but I’m happy to bet my house on the fact that, at a minimum, they saw plenty of doping in their time; right up til the late 2000s. The silence is deafening. But I guess if you’re still working in cycling, you can’t be seen to be spitting in the soup.

        • velocite

To me that was a fascinating statistic of Museeuw’s, that only 2% of the peloton did *not* take EPO. What a difference it would have made if they had all come out. It would have characterized the era, not just a few supposed moral failures, and maybe there wouldn’t be the lost years.

          • jules

but we know that’s true, we’ve known for a long time. Bassons, Moncoutier, Brad McGee, a few others.. we don’t need the others to come out. the clean riders from that era have basically been outed by those members of the peloton with a conscience. that’s one thing that Lance was so angry about – outing clean riders made everyone else look dirty! yes, technically that was factual, but…

    • Simon

I can offer some insight. The omerta that he refers to is not only doping but…..well, the people in the photo were stunned because only a moment before they learned that Museeuw has a toupee! You could hear a pin drop! Their Lion of Flanders was without a true mane. I’ve told him before that to embrace the lack of follicles will truly set you free. I said “Look here Lion, just ditch the toupe and you’ll be better for it. You can’t keep fooling your fans and yourself. ” He didn’t.

      • Dave

I had a friend who did something similar to that.

She told her parents she was pregnant when she wasn’t … and then told her she had just got a tattoo.

    • Dave

“Everyone seems to be so happy in that shot.”

Notice the similarity with the Wiggle-Honda riders, maybe that crowd had all just done a TTT effort?

    • It’s from Wouter Weylandt’s funeral in 2011.

      • Michele

Thanks Matt. Certainly explains the sombre faces.

Loved the Wiggle Honda video,Great insight on team training. The girls did not get it quite right on the day but gave it a great shot.
Looking forward to watching more of the worlds.

    • Dave

They did a good job on the day considering the lack of firepower they brought, losing just 1:10 to a team which specialises in the discipline.

They do have a pretty strong shot at the Women’s Road Race with Jolien d’Hoore – and I’m actually surprised they risked her so early in the week.

  • Dave

The TTT showed quite clearly how poor a state cycling is in at the moment both across the world and particularly in the USA.

The men’s field had to be padded out with a bunch of local Continental (i.e. third division) teams to keep some crowd interest thanks to only two Professional Continental teams (second division) entering. With so many places for Pro-Conti teams not taken up, Drapac could have entered.

The same applied to the women’s race, also padded out with a few domestic teams.
