Following on from the recent announcement that Pierre Rolland will be joining the squad, Cannondale-Garmin has announced that the 2013 and 2014 Giro d’Italia runner-up Rigoberto Uran will also be part of the team next season.
Currently riding with the Etixx – Quick-Step setup, Uran is moving across after a successful two years there. He won a stage and took that runner-up slot in the 2014 Giro d’Italia, one year after doing the same with Team Sky, and also placed third in the Tour of Oman.
This year he was third overall in Tirreno-Adriatico and also took fifth in both the Volta a Catalunya and the Tour de Romandie.
“Rigo is a leader, not just for his excellent skills on the road but for his charisma,” said the team CEO Jonathan Vaughters of the Colombian TT champion. “He brings style and passion to racing and he will be a huge asset to the team.”
He said that the Italian Grand Tour would be a major target next season.
“Rigo has one more step to climb in the Giro and I will put my heart into helping make that happen. We are very excited to add him to our 2016 line up.”
Uran’s signing and that of Rolland will help fill the gap left by the departing Dan Martin and Ryder Hesjedal. Martin is heading to Etixx – Quick-Step while Hesjedal will be part of Trek Factory Racing in 2016.
In addition to his Giro performances, Uran was also runner-up in the 2012 Olympic Games and will likely target next year’s event.
