Caleb Ewan has managed seven wins already in 2016, two of them at WorldTour level.

OGE procession (well deserved), not to say that this wasn’t a great TDU, but no doubt getting someone like Froome out next year will be priority no.1.

    • _kw

I think given the timing of TDU none of the GC names warnt to be near peak form an this time of the year. So I would not hold my breath for it…

      • Dave

They’re all mercenaries. Enough cashola and they’ll race anywhere at any time.

The money normally spent on appearance fees must have gone on upgrading the WTDU this time.

    • Dave

Yes, definitely the weakest TDU field of the WorldTour era.

In all respects other than the quality of the men’s race though, it was easily the best TDU ever. The WTDU putting Australia back on the international women’s map for the first time since the Road World Championships was a highlight, the track meet on the Friday night was well supported, the Norton Summit Time Trial went well, and there was a good program of local racing that was coordinated with the event.

  • Fun fact: in 18 years of the Tour Down Under, this is only the second edition in which an Australian has won every stage. The other time was 2002 in which Robbie McEwen won four stages, Cadel Evans won one, and Michael Rogers won one stage and the overall.

Both years a fan gave up their bike for one of the riders as well!

Oh man, i can’t watch Ewan sprint like that. How is he going to control his bike on bad roads or a tight sprint while hanging his full upper body over the bars?

    • Jake(Aus)

I personally reckon if you watch closely Cav has always sprinted in a similar manner (i.e. gets real low and over the bars)?

      • Dave

And look at the number of crashes that Cav has caused over the years.

        • Jake(Aus)

Hehe well he has been involved in a few hasnt he….still not like it held Cav back enough to stop him becoming one of the greatest sprinters of all time

    • Dave

Indeed. Not many races in Europe have the high quality roads and nice wide finishing straights that he gets in the Bay Crits and TDU.

      • Jake(Aus)

Ur right Ewan will never make it if he doesn’t change his style (insert sarcasm here)

  • Oleg T.

If you watch the aerial shot of the sprint, you’ll see had Blythe been closer to the front he’d have pushed Ewan all the way. Great long sprint by him.
