Kirsten Wild wins stage 1 of the Ladies Tour of Qatar

by Matt de Neef

Kirsten Wild (Hitec Products) has claimed the opening stage of the Ladies Tour of Qatar, beating Annalisa Cucinotta (Alé-Cipollini) and Lizzie Williams (Orica-AIS) to the top step of the podium.

Despite several attempts to break up the race — including a late solo move from Chloe McConville (Orica-AIS) — the stage remained largely together for the bunch sprint.

“Maybe it looks easy but it’s really hard racing,” Wild said. “My heartrate was over 200 bpm in the sprint. My team helped me really and that makes it easier of course.”

The stage win is Wild’s 10th at the Ladies Tour of Qatar, a race she has won overall four times. She now leads the 2016 edition with a seven-second lead.

Today’s second stage of the four-stage race will take the riders 120km from Sheikh Faisal Museum to Al Khor Corniche.

“Legendary cyclist convicted of multiple doping offences says people who dope differently to how he did should be banned for life”.

It would help the sport’s credibility not to give mouthpieces to some people on this topic.

    • Michele

In Eddy’s world, there’s cheating, and then there’s cheating.

He would never have cheated that way; his way of cheating wasn’t sinister at all. Heck, you couldn’t even put a Wattage amount on the PEDs he used.

Leave the guy alone. He’s doing a great job of promoting cycling in the Gulf region. It’s just what the sport needs. And he’s a champion for it’s cause.

      • Festinger

Yes. Same goes for Rasmussen and his comments on this matter. He’d gladly promote the sport anywhere the UCI would have him go. And deary me he’d have never used a motor. Do we make these assumptions for our own peace of mind or what.

Maradona who appeared in a dishevelled state was asked about the tribute jersey and said something about how he liked the lines but it wasn’t clear he heard or was responding to the question

    • Arfy

Oh, I wondered where the white lines on the jersey went.

    • Andy B

      one of your best jules

  • Arfy

Is Tinkoff in the process of selling to Maradona?

  • Gavin Adkins

Great shot of Garry “Feel the Millburn” in the feature image. It’s a shame MTBA don’t seem to see any need to celebrate the tremendous efforts of the trailblazing Australians at Zolder this year.

    • Dave

Isn’t cyclocross under the authority of Cycling Australia, not MTB Australia?

    • Andy B

      looks totally cooked :)

Hey CT, I like the tweaks to the Daily Digest layout.

Next thing: restore the Rocacorba Daily name!

    • Thanks Dave! I’m glad you noticed. The new format has been months in the works. This Daily News is one of our best read pieces but it had a lot of problems – namely the fact that it’s hard to find individual pieces later on, and people can’t share or link to an individual piece within.

We didn’t want to ruin the reader experience so we kept everything the same externally, but notice that each piece has its own unique URL that can be shared and indexed by google.

      • JCJordan

Unfortunatly it means that I can no longer read the Daily News at lunch. Darn government computers.

  • justanotheropinion

On the Mechanical Assisted Doping issue, go and read Lees lowdown on PEZ or Crankpunk for an opinion piece written with clear eyes on the sport.

  • The photo of Gary Milburn shows the extreme effort required to finish on the lead lap in the CX Worlds. It was a great result from Gary & Chris J. Suspect there were plenty of other finishers looking that wrecked.

  • Damian Eley

Does the Tinkoff/Maradona jersey feature a qhubeka hand on the back by any chance?

    • jules

      gold!

and don’t forget SkyDive Dubai (though I can’t recall if he was much of a diver)

  • Dave

CyclingNews.com has published what would probably be the most hilarious update on the Femke van den Driessche saga so far – her father and brother are facing charges and potential jail time for stealing budgies from a pet shop!

    http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/van-den-driessches-friend-claims-ownership-of-motorised-bike/

    • Whammy

Budgie smugglers! Ban them from pet shops for life!!

      • 900Aero

No doubt we’ll soon see our ex-PM rush to their defence, he’s always had a soft spot for budgie-smugglers. People smugglers, not so much.
