Boasson Hagen wins stage two of Tour of Oman

Victorious on stage three of the Tour of Qatar but missing out on the overall win due to a double puncture, Edvald Boasson Hagen bounced back on stage two of the Tour of Oman on Wednesday.

The Team Dimension Data rider was strongest on the finishing climb to Quriyat, beating 2014 Tour de France winner Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) and Greg Van Avermaet (BMC Racing Team) at the end of the 2.8 kilometre ramp.

Six others also finished in the same group, namely Domenico Pozzovivo (AG2R La Mondiale), Davide Rebellin (CCC Sprandi Polkowice), Gianluca Brambilla (Etixx – QuickStep), Nibali’s team-mate Jakob Fuglsang, Romain Bardet (AG2R La Mondiale) and former world champion Rui Costa (Lampre – Merida).

Overnight race leader Bob Jungels cracked and finished 59 seconds back, enabling Boasson Hagen to take over at the top. He is four seconds ahead of Nibali heading towards Friday’s crucial Green Mountain stage.

“It was a really good stage for us today,” he said. “The whole team was strong, it was a great effort by all the guys which I was really happy with. It was great to then finish off all the good work with the win.”
