Vincenzo Nibali wins the Tour of Oman, Alexander Kristoff takes the final stage

by Matt de Neef

Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) has won the 2016 Tour of Oman after climbing his way into the overall lead on the race’s queen stage over the weekend.

Nibali took out stage 4 after besting Romain Bardet (Ag2r La Mondiale) and teammate Jakob Fuglsang on the steep climb up Green Mountain, the result putting those three atop the general classification.

In the race’s penultimate stage, Edvald Boasson Hagen (Dimension Data) took his second victory for the week, winning a reduced bunch sprint against Greg Van Avermaet (BMC) and Marco Canola (UnitedHealthcare). Nibali finished comfortably in the lead group to maintain his overall lead.

And on the race’s final stage, Alexander Kristoff (Katusha) rocketed to his fifth victory of the season, accounting for Giant-Alpecin pair Zico Waeytens and Søren Kragh Andersen in the bunch sprint. Nibali again finished in the bunch, ensuring he would win the 2.HC race overall.

I probably laughed more than I should of at Kristoffer’s tweet

    • ceedee

      It was very funny.

      • I’m pretty sure it’s the first time I’ve laughed out loud and snorted out my coffee while reading the DND!

        • David Bonnett

Why do I suspect Phil Gaimon was the teammate who “helped”? ;-)

          • Stirrer

The Tweets in response were quite funny too. There’s lots of ways to improve the sport but…

By all accounts little mate Onev suffered a similar fate on the weekend trying to keep up with his bunch buddies.

It’s Monday and I too am ready to fist myself in front of my staff to set a good example for the week ahead.

Canty is an animal! he’s doing so well for someone who hasn’t really had the opportunity to learn all of the finer points of pro cycling yet. his talent is obviously off the scale.

    • claude cat

You’d think he’d be a useful addition to OGE’s stocks wouldn’t you? PCS seems to indicate he’s got a contract with Drapac until the end of 2017, wondering if there’s an out clause for a WT contract?

      • jules

I’d hope so – I think it would be a poor outcome for Brendan if there wasn’t. It wouldn’t matter so much if Drapac were getting more invites to high level races but it doesn’t help his cause when they’re riding NRS or Tourof Noonehasheardotsan

        • Geoff

Be interesting to hear from the man himself whether the Tour of San Luis was more interesting than the higher-level but mind-numbing TDU (Nibali, Sagan and Quintana seemed to think so)

          • We’re hoping to speak with him soon. I suspect he’s on his way home from the Middle East as we speak.

            • Steve

Maybe stake out papa bear cafe in eltham ;-)

      • Bex

i’m glad he hasn’t gone to OGE straight away, gives him a chance to show what he’s got riding as a leader. Hopefully they do some more big races that suit him; a little time at pro conti won’t do him any harm. last yr he stepped up well at Utah and California (crashes stopped better results). Also gives him a chance to prove he can be consistent, which is better than having one or two big results then anonymous years as a domestique.

  • CB

So sad to hear of the passing of David Duffield. A true character of cycling. Looking forward to reading tributes offered from those who knew him best.

    • CB

I sincerely hope CT count themselves amongst those paying tribute.

  • Natureboy

It might be the photo – but Valverde looks like he’s been eating too many spanish donuts over the off season
    the Kaiser would be proud

    • Donut King

And yet he still beat TJV.

  • Nitro

Volta ao Algarve – The Time Trial on cobbles, with a JCB as a crash pad if you’re not concentrating as you cross the finish line ?!?

  • ed

tour of oman – great daily highlights available on sbs on demand. i think it is the best of the four races held in the middle east. would be interested to know what the riders think. brendan canty’s ride up green mtn was sensational. hoping the race doesnt get the axe.
