Voeckler wins stage one of the Tour de la Provence

by Shane Stokes

Thomas Voeckler returned to the top of the podium on Tuesday when he soled to victory on day one of Tour Cycliste International La Provence race. The Frenchman clocked up a win for his new sponsor Direct Energie, kicking clear with two laps remaining of the finishing circuit in Cassis.

The riders behind chased hard, but he reached the line seven seconds clear of his closest pursuer, Petr Vakoc (Etixx – QuickStep). Vockler’s team-mate Lilian Calmejane outsprinted Pieter Serry (Etixx – QuickStep) and Chris Anker Sörensen (Fortuneo – Vital Concept) two seconds later.

Now 36 years of age, the aggressive rider last took a win back in 2013. That season he took a stage plus the overall in each of the Route du Sud and the Tour du Poitou-Charentes, as well as stage six of the Criterium du Dauphine.

The success will add momentum to the team, which raced last year as Europcar prior to a sponsor change. It lost Pierre Rolland to Cannondale Pro Cycling over the winter, but has taken seven other wins thus far this season. These include three stages plus the overall in the Tropicale Amissa Bongo, courtesy of Adrien Petit, plus a total of three stages in the Etoile de Bessèges with Bryan Coquard and Sylvain Chavanel.

The 2.1-ranked race continues tomorrow with a 199 kilometre leg to Istres.

OGE: “we love everything you do MPCC, but yeah we’ll just watch from over here”

I mean, why ride cleaner than you have to…

    • Dave

You think that MPCC teams are riding cleaner? The evidence does not support the perceptions!

If anything, OGE are just being more honest about it.

      • Bex

yeah I’d say the only time i hear about the MPCC is when teams are leaving because they don’t want to enforce the rules above and beyond what the UCI deems necessary. this kind of makes sense since they’re a business of sorts and punishing yourself because well… umm.. who really benefits from them taking themselves out of competition for a week when they don’t have to. unless all the teams are in it and enforcing it, it’s a bit of a waste of time.

  • Nitro

Incredible how incredibly hard it is for an organisation who’s name is centred on the word credible to indeed be credible when all the teams seeking to be part of the credible organisation – in order to boost their credibility – quit the organisation because of its credible stance…

    • Schlong

      MPCC
      Must Perceive Credible Credibility

      • Dave

I was going to go with Many Perceive we’re a Cool Club so you’ve sort of beaten me to it there.

  • Tim Ashton

Seems odd that Kwiatowski is not doing Strade Bianche….he won it only 2 years ago

    • Bex

isn’t he try to change into a GC contender, so probably focusing on that and reducing risk of injury by not racing the classics. i’m not sure if he’s doing any others.

      • Tim Ashton

I thought he went to sky because they wanted to win the one day classics. Its not like they dont already have a queue of GC contenders ready.

      • Dave

I would have thought he’d be waiting for the Ardennes Classics. Sky have more than enough GC options even without him.

  • Robert Merkel

OK, I ran Shane Bannan’s statement through the bulldust filter and this is what came out….

    …crickets chirping…

Can Shane or Neal get the real story please?

    • Feral

I agree. At least Katusha’s decision was unashamededly cynical. OGE’s statement is wrapped up in so many layers of management speak gobbledegook that it’s rendered useless.
