Andrea Guardini wins stage one of the Tour de Langkawi

by Shane Stokes

Clocking up what is a phenomenal 19th career stage win in the Tour de Langkawi, Andrea Guardini proved once again he is the fastest sprinter in the Malaysian event on day one of this year’s edition.

The Astana rider had little problem in powering past his rivals inside the final 200 metres of the stage to Baling, leading home Australia’s Brenton Jones (Drapac Professional Cycling), Andrea Palini (SkyDive Dubai), John Murphy (UnitedHealthcare) plus the rest of the bunch.

“It’s always hard to win, especially when being the hot favourite,” he acknowledged afterwards. “On stage one, it’s also difficult to take control of the events. Everyone was waiting for my team to do it.

“Fortunately, Southeast collaborated with us to catch the breakaway. There were good riders at the front but a lot of head wind at the end. As a team, we’ve done a good job but we’ve also lost one rider [Ruslan Tleubayev] who broke a collarbone in a crash. It’s nice to have the jersey but it’ll be even more difficult to control the race with one rider less.”

He will start stage two with a slender two second lead over Chinese rider Meiyin Wang (Hengxiang Cycling Team), who was one of four breakaway riders. Wang took two intermediate sprints, taking time bonuses, and putting him into second overall despite their recapture.

Roche isn’t pulling any punches, but reading the blog he seems to be referring to this year’s Tour in regards to Thomas’ chances, not future Tours. Of course if Thomas is riding to support Froome then his chances of winning will be dented, he would need to be a protected rider to go up against the calibre of other contenders who will also be protected by their own teams. But if the unfortunate happens to Froome early in the Tour then I’d give Thomas a good chance of a podium placing, and that would mean he’s in the mix to win. Maybe Roche’s ploy is to keep Thomas grounded, and take the pressure of public expectation off of him.

Any more news about the EPO-GE withdrawal from MPCC yet?

As well as answers from the team, it would be good to chase up a statement from Cycling Australia on the matter. It can’t have been a surprise to CA, OGE and CA are still so tightly packaged that even Apple would be envious.
