Guardini takes his third stage victory of 2016 Le Tour de Langkawi

by Shane Stokes

He’s been hugely impressive in this year’s Le Tour de Langkawi, and on Tuesday Andrea Guardini continued with the same momentum, clocking up what is his 21st career victory in the event.

Guardini powered into Parit Sulong ahead of fellow Italians Jakub Mareczko (Southeast – Venezuela) and Andrea Palini (Skydive Dubai Pro Cycling Team) to take a hat-trick of stages in the 2016 edition.

“Astana had such a good tactic today with a strong rider [Laurens De Vreese] in the breakaway,” he said afterwards. “Nobody wanted to pull strongly in the finale but it turned out to be a bunch sprint and it was a very good one for me.

“With 200m to go, I passed in a very small gap between two other riders but a bit of luck is always needed for winning a bunch sprint.”

The day’s break numbered six riders including De Vreese, but was hauled back before the end. Reinardt J V Rensburg (Dimension Data) retains the overall lead heading into Wednesday’s final stage, and is a solid 11 seconds clear of Daniel Alexander Jaramillo Diez (UnitedHealthCare).

That hitters in the dark video is brilliant. Either my blood sugar levels are low post-ride or the concise articulation of why we ride has made me a bit emotional. Well played

    • Scott

Agree great video, although a couple of those hitters should probably get some lights ; )

I don’t get it, they can get all that from an afternoon ride.

  • Cameron Harris

No Drapac for ToC this year? That must be a blow?

    • Dave

Interesting that they start a new agreement with ASO and immediately get 10 WorldTour teams.

      Discord in the UCI-Velon alliance?

  • Chris

    Schleck “not angry”.
“I was in yellow and my teammate attacked me,”
Granted, I haven’t studied analysis of the 2008 TdF or kept up with Carlos/Frank relationship over the years, but I recall the attack being a seen as a CSC one-two against Cadel with the “one” sticking.
But yeah – he’s totes not angry.

    • jules

      he’s obviously angry :)

I think that was the right strategy. if they had tried instead to mark out Cadel, the risk was of Frank getting dropped and losing yellow, but Carlos not gaining the time he needed to take over as leader (from memory, Cadel was in 2nd going into the Alpe stage?). Sastre attacking put CSC in the driver’s seat, by having 2 riders in a position to take/keep yellow.

I think Frank gets that too.

      • Chris

“I think Frank gets that too.”
I’m sure on one level he does, and I’m sure he has to understand he’d have lost to Cadel anyway, but the quote about Sastre attacking him (and not Cadel) still stands. Must be a strange headspace to be in.
I was surprised when the Schlecks and Fabian split to make Leopard , but this sheds some light perhaps.

  • Winky

Starting the Saturday ride in the dark is perhaps an Australian thing? Club rides in the UK and Canada start at a later time. Or perhaps it has something to do with temperatures. Too cold (and maybe icy) in colder climes for a really early start, and conversely, in Oz, you need to be done by the time the ungodly heat kicks in (and you need to beat the ute-borne bogans or risk being run off the road). Of course, in NSW road cycling is now effectively banned, so the point is moot in that jurisdiction.

    • MushieG

For me its 3 fold – 1 to avoid the cars/utes etc, 2 the heat & 3 get to spend more time with the kids and wife

Plus the bonus is the nice sun rises and less cross winds! (and I cant see how dirty my bike has gotten)

      • Chris

+1 on all of that in Singapore as well. Particularly the dirty bike thing – Quite a shock to see it after work in the daylight sometimes.

The early start and early finish is an appeal to me too. Extra family time…but it can make the Saturday evening dinner party a bit of an endurance event if you don’t get the afternoon nap in!

    • De Mac

A lot of bunch rides are done before work during the week, hence the 5am starts.

  • Dave

Well done CT, you guys scored another mention in The GCN Show this morning.
