Coquard doubles wins at Four Days of Dunkirk

by Mark Zalewski

The battle between French sprinters Bryan Coquard (Direct Energie) and Nacer Bouhanni (Cofidis, Solutions Crédits) continued on the second stage of the Four Days of Dunkirk, with Coquard again geting the best of an ill-placed Bouhanni in the final metres.

“Until 5km to go we worked with Cofidis to catch the escape but then we imposed ourselves,” Coquard said. “I have to thank my team; again they worked so hard.”

With 3km to go Bouhanni was not following his teammates as on stage one, but instead was riding behind race leader Coquard. As if he knew the helicopter camera was focusing on him, Bouhanni then began to weave his way through the front of the group, aided by the occasional elbow tap, to finally find his teamamtes.

Nikki Terpstra (Etixx-QuickStep) put in an immense pull on the front of the group, heading into the slight uphill at 1km to go. Cofidis then took over with a train, while Etixx-QuickStep reshuffled. The sharp turn at 500m blew any hope of team organisation apart and sprinters were isolated to fend for themselves. Once again Bouhanni was out of place, having to come around riders while Coquard had a clear path to the finish.

“I love this race, the way it rolls,” said Coquard. “It’s all about the final, and my job is all about the end of the race, and with my team we are going well.”

Wonder if he’d have got DQ’d if it had been a Stumpy with discs…

    • Dave

      No.

These lower-ranked races are overseen by domestic (i.e. USA Cycling) officials, and USA Cycling has refused to ban disc brakes without a good reason.

  • Dave

    Dear CT editors,

Cycling uses kilometres for distance and metres for altitude, not any combination of miles, furlongs, rods, chains, yards, feet, etc.

    —————-

Sir Dave might have problems with UK employment law if he tries to sack someone on the basis of an unproven allegation. A hefty golden handshake would be required.

I always enjoy seeing Bouhanni not winning. Plus Coquard is pretty likeable.

Dear Mr Cancellara, in answer to your question “Who the hell wants to go 480 watts on the flat?” – ME !

I know when I look at my power curve, I can indeed hit 480 watts, but I’m picking that you can maintain that for a little longer than I can…

Which is why you’re Pro, and I’m not…
