Dumoulin takes first Maglia Rosa in Giro d’Italia

by Shane Stokes

Achieving goal number one in this Giro d’Italia, Tom Dumoulin scorched to an opening day win in the race and secured the pink jersey of overall leader.

The Dutchman took a cherished victory on home soil, covering the 9.8 kilometre course in Apeldoorn in 11 minutes 3 seconds. This was fractionally better than Primoz Roglic (LottoNL-Jumbo), with Andrey Amador (Movistar Team) and Tobias Ludvigsson (Giant-Alpecin) six and eight seconds back respectively in third and fourth place.

Dumoulin’s victory has a special significance for two reasons. In addition to coming in the Netherlands, it is also the team’s first win of the season. Giant-Alpecin was badly affected by a training camp crash which injured six riders, amongst them John Degenkolb.

That likely put paid to early victories, increasing the pressure on Dumoulin at the Giro.

“It is a relief,” he admitted. “I am feeling a bit sick in my stomach, but also very happy.”

Great to see Giant-Alpecin chalk one up for the season after the terrible start they’ve had this year.

  • Love that the Europeans racing Chongming are all open-jersey, while the Taiwanese winner needed arm-warmers.

Ah it is such a shame that Orica Greenedge can’t post Backstage Pass footage from the Giro this year! Does anyone know exactly why? Have the organisers restricted sharing footage?

Looks like they failed to come to an agreement regarding a licence for commercial reproduction and will have to generate all their own content.

This is not the first time that they’ve had issues with licensing. I’m sure Eurosport would have sent them an invoice after the Paris-Roubaix video.

Ah I understand why they would have issues using actual broadcasted race footage, but I am still in the dark as to why they cannot use their OWN footage that they film in the race? I just find it surprising! Thanks for the answer though mate!

        • Dave

It’s not about copyright, but the exclusive rights to the race and certain connected events like podium presentations. The broadcast rights holders pay a large amount of money for that exclusivity and are well within their rights to insist it be honoured.

The team need to put their heads together and present the broadcasters with a proposal for a mutually beneficial arrangement. Two options could be giving the broadcast rights holders exclusive use of the Backstage Pass videos until they’ve had a chance to air it as part of the following day’s coverage, or having them posted on the broadcasters’ websites rather than YouTube.
