Roglic wins the stage 9 Giro time trial, Brambilla maintains his overall lead

by Shane Stokes

Gianluca Brambilla (Etixx-QuickStep) leads the 2016 Giro d’Italia by a single second ahead of teammate Bob Jungels after nine stages of racing.

Brambilla moved into the pink jersey of overall race leader when he won Saturday’s stage 8, attacking solo from the day-long breakaway on the final categorised climb.

In the stage 9 individual time trial, Brambilla put in an impressive ride in very wet conditions to finish 17th, enough to hold on to the maglia rosa for another day. The stage was won by Slovenian Primoz Roglic (LottoNL-Jumbo) who made up for finishing second to Tom Dumoulin (Giant-Alpecin) in the stage 1 ITT with a strong performance.

After today’s rest day the Giro continues with a 219km stage from Campi Bisenzio to Sestola. The stage features four categorised climbs including a first-category ascent that peaks 16km from the line and a 7.6km final ascent to the finish.

Did the Katusha rider sitting on in the Giro TT get disqualified?

    • Dave

No, disqualification is not the applicable penalty for drafting in a time trial. He got fined 100CHF and hit with a 6:48 time penalty according to the calculations for the speed and distance.

In addition, Katusha withdrew him from the race.

  • Arfy

So if Pouly’s spare bike was only there for spare parts, what was he going to do if he needed to change bikes during the race? Have a quick change of frame? Sounds like team organised cheating, good to see them DQ’d.

  • Arfy

I had Ulissi’s Stage 4 win ahead of Brambilla’s Stage 8, but Brambilla’s performance to back it up in Stage 9 has to be the ride of the Giro so far.

  • Laurens

That Pouly guy in Banyuwangi… if he knew his bike was too light but he ‘just wanted to race’, couldn’t he have added some weight? Pour sand in the seat tube for all I care. He had more than two choices is what I’m saying.

    • Dave

Pouring sand in the seat tube might cause damage to the motor.

      • Laurens

        LOL
