Steven Kruijswijk takes a solid lead into the Giro d’Italia’s final rest day

by Matt de Neef

With 15 stages of the 2016 Giro d’Italia now complete, Dutchman Steven Kruijswijk (LottoNL-Jumbo) has built a commanding lead off the back of two strong days in the mountains.

Kruijswijk finished second on Saturday’s stage 14, the race’s queen stage, as he and Esteban Chaves (Orica-GreenEdge) broke clear of the other GC contenders on a long, hard day in the Dolomites. Chaves won the stage ahead of Kruijswijk and Georg Preidler (Giant-Alpecin) but it was Kruijswijk that moved into the pink jersey of overall race leader.

On Sunday’s stage 15, an all-uphill individual time trial on the Alpe di Siusi, Kruijswijk again finished second when he posted a time just hundredths of a second slower than surprise stage winner Alexander Foliforov (Gazprom-Rusvelo). Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) again lost time to Kruijswijk, the Dutchman now sitting more than two minutes clear of Chaves atop the general classification.

Today is the third and final rest day of the 2016 Giro d’Italia after which the riders have five more days in the mountains and then a processional sprint stage into Torino to close out the race.

      • krashdavage

        I think you’re lying Kathryn

        • Sean Doyle

I think Mary might have a cam in her room!

  • Spider

Muppet hunting on Motos – the Giro always seems to be more interesting than the tour!!! That rider has brought joy to proper cycling fans the world over!

  • Sean parker

    Even Jeannie?

    • jules

this is not a great revelation

    • Sean Doyle

You’re asking like you didn’t think so?!!

  • Bex

great to see race moto’s being used for good rather than evil. i was waiting for a spectator to cause a crash during the tt last night, it was making me mad.

    • Avuncular

Pity they didn’t run down the guy wearing the number 10 Biaggio top, he was particularly obnoxious.

      • Patrick Murphy

I’m going to make it my lifes work to hunt that man down!! What a complete waste of skin that guy is.

  • Arfy

It’s always frustrating to have a dash next to a name in the results sheets when filtering, it defeats the purpose of applying a filter. Can CT get this fixed?

  • jules

also can I politely remind everyone that it’s pronounced Dollo-mee-tez, not Dollar Mights? thank you

    • Arfy

If you’re speaking Italian then yes, Joo-less. English is “dollar-mights”, Aussie is “dulla-mites”, and bogan is “f*ing big hill”.

      • jules

I’m not saying people should go to jail for it, but it’s an Italian word/name, not an English one. so it’s pronounced the Italian way.

I don’t hear anyone calling it the Mail-lot John :)

        • Arfy

But that’s different, the english translation is “yellow jersey”, whereas the proper english pronunciation is “dollar-mights”.

      • jules

I feel like I’m watching an old Rolf Harris performance. they seem so friendly and kind :)

  • Nitro

Sad to see Nibbles hit by a mechanical…. however… I do feel somewhat vindicated since the same thing happened to me a couple of years ago – riding along and the rear mech – without warning – decided that it didn’t want to be best friends with the frame anymore… Not an amicable divorce – more of a break for freedom / desire to get in bed with the front derailleur…

“What did you hit / what did you smack it against?” they all cried. Everyone was as sceptical as you’d expect with a “I was just riding along…” explanation, but now we know that if it happens to the pros, it can happen to any of us…

    • jules

I’m guessing that if the chain comes off the front and jams, continuing to apply power at the pedals will cause the RD cage/spring to wind up and if there’s too much power – snap.

      • winkybiker

Yes, if the chain jams such that it wraps around the front chainrings and sucks up behind the chainrings (perhaps as a result of wedging between the chainrings) the RD will run out of capacity and fail if you keep pedalling. Other things that can cause RD failure are:

        1) A seized freewheel/free-hub
        2) Your RD being shifted into the spokes
        3) A kinked or damaged chain jamming in the jockey wheels

        • claude cat

          You forgot 4) Campag

          ;)

          • winkybiker

            Ouch!

        • Dave

In the case of Nibbles, also consider:

          5) Karma, striking at the next available grand tour.

          • Hugh Davis

Absolutely I feel like Nibali and Astana are not doing much for the sport of cycling. Mind you I am speaking from a position of near total ignorance!!

      • Nitro

All I read was yabba yabba yabba “Caused by putting out too much power” yabba yabba yabba.

        You’ve made my day…

    • Sean Doyle

I heard “mechanical” and thought his tow vehicle had broken down!!

  • Michele

CT .. small type/error in the “JL” headline above. Surely it should read:

“Jeannie Longo’s husband faces criminal trial for wearing hideous jumper”??

    • Laurens

It does say it was taken in 1985. That jumper still had its cool then. He now uses it to conceal the epo itself because he knows people automatically look away.

  • Dave

Dan is a terrific race commentator.

That has its problems though – because he has to leave the box during the final to conduct the unilateral interviews, leaving the clueless muppet alongside him to call the finish.

  • De Mac

Great to see the Weendog taking GC in Norway – despite him having left OGE, he’s still a crowd favourite!

  • VerticallyCompliant

Great to see John Degenkolb rolling through with a few top tens finishes in California.

  • claude cat

    IAM finishing.
