Kluge spoils sprinters’ day and gives IAM a reason to smile at Giro d’Italia

by Michael Better

Two days after IAM Cycling owner Michel Thétaz announced the team would not continue into 2017, German Roger Kluge put his powerful frame to good use and attacked inside the final kilometer, bridging to Filippo Pozzatto (Wilier Triestina-Southeast), before passing the flashy Italian and winning the stage.

“I’ve been a pro for six years and this is the big victory I have been looking for,” said Kluge, silver medalist at the 2008 Olympic points race. “It’s a dream. It wasn’t planned at all. I was working for Heinrich Haussler, closing the gap for him but I saw a possibility to get away. The finishing line was very near.

“It’s a strange feeling. We were very disappointed to hear that our team is going to stop at the end of the year but we decided to stick together and it’s wonderful to come up with a victory to make it up for our disappointment”.

Giacomo Nizzolo (Trek-Segafredo) led the peloton home in the same time as the winner. Nikias Arndt (Giant-Alpecin) rounded out the podium in third.

The general classification remained unchanged, with maglia rosa Steven Kruijswijk (LottonNL-Jumbo) finishing safely in the peloton, along with all of the other GC contenders.

why is BC investigating Shane Sutton when he’s already resigned? if they have broader concerns about the culture and practices that surfaced in Shane’s behaviour, surely the scope of the investigation should be broadened? of course, if you just wanted a scapegoat to justify maintaining the status quo..

    • Dave

There are certain others who the establishment will want protected.

I have no doubt that a handsome severance was agreed with Sutton in return for his taking the fall.

The Guardian report says that the terms of reference of the enquiry are yet to be published, so maybe the scope will be broad. Anyhow, if they publish a report it should be an entertaining read.

Victoria Pendleton’s bete noire was Martin Barras, who told her she was too ‘girly and puny’ to ever make it. I think Barras also missed out on Robbie McEwen, didn’t he? But if you’re hiring a coach, whom do you pick: the one you think will win or the snag?

      • Sean

nah that was charlie who overlooked robbie. Charlie is the most overrated coach around IMO.

        • Dave

I never knew that road cycling was Robbie’s second choice after being rejected by the track program.

      • jules

my error – upon closer reading I don’t think they have necessarily restricted the inquiry into Sutton alone. but that remains to be seen.

        • donncha

According to the Guardian article the review is into the culture at BC, not Sutton. I think CT just mistakenly made it about Sutton. Bloody clickbait ;-)

Those GreenEdge Backstage Passes seem to me to be a kind of breakthrough – top athletes not taking themselves too seriously. But seriously entertaining.

    • Not being able to use race footage from the Giro has forced Dan Jones and the team to get a bit more creative. It seems to be working pretty well for them.
