Claeys wins third stage of Tour de Wallonie

by CyclingTips

The longest stage of the of the  Tour de Wallonie came down to a sprint with Dimitri Claeys (Wanty-Groupe Gobert) beating race leader Gianni Meersman (Etixx-Quick Step) and Jonathan Hivert (Fortuneo – Vital Concept).

“We were disappointed after the carash and the withdrawal of our leader Enrico Gasparotto,” said Claeys. “As for me, I wanted to avenge my lackluster early season. My recent altitude training has put me in excellent condition and my team did a great job on Monday with Boris Dron in a breakaway and Thomas Degand in the final.

Meersman took over the race lead from teammate Tom Boonen, but is essentially tied on time with Claeys.

“At first I was disappointed with my second place, but I finally think I can be satisfied because I took possession of the yellow jersey,” said Meersman. “I have not had a good spring, but I trained well for this race as it is a goal for me.”

Looking ahead, Claeys said that the GC battle is just beginning at that his team will have a lot of cards to play. “There are still two tough stages and this opens up opportunities.”
