The penultimate stage in the Giro Rosa today! We’re not sure how the break of the day was formed, but we know there was one.
Nine riders found each other 45 kilometers into the stage and reached the top of the GPM climb together: Audrey Cordon-Ragot (Wiggle-High5), Alena Amialiusik (Canyon-SRAM), Malgorzata Jasinska (Alé Cipollini), Lex Albrecht (BePink), Lauren Kitchen (Team Hitec), Ana Covrig (Inpa-Bianchi), Anna Ceoloni (Servetto-Footon), Riejanne Markus (Liv-Plantur) and a BTC City Ljubljana rider.
Four of them were able to hold their lead the longest, but another bunch sprint was imminent as the peloton closed in on them in the final kilometers.
Wiggle-High5 took another sprint finish win, with Giorgia Bronzini beating Maria Bastianelli (Alé Cipollini) and Maria Giulia Confalonieri (Lensworld-Zannata), which means it’s all Italian riders filling the stage 8 podium.
The pink jersey has never been in any danger today. There’s only one stage left for the US road champion to fight for pink and bring the jersey home this year.

What’s in store for the riders in stage 9
No mountain top finish in the last stage like in San Domenico di Varzo in 2015, but a rather straighforward final stage for the Giro Rosa peloton. The stage consists of three laps on a course north of Lago Maggiore, with a little detour in the third one, where the final GPM points in this Giro Rosa are awarded, on the category-2-climb to Bée.
With a gap of 7 seconds to mountain jersey wearer Elisa Longo Borghini (Wiggle-High), Mara Abbott is the only danger for Longo Borghin’s win in this classification. We’re not expecting Abbott to take away this jersey from her teammate and home rider Longo Borghini.
In the points classification, Guarnier leads with 58 points to Stevens’ 52 and Bronzini’s 40. It will be interesting to see whether the purple jersey changes shoulders to Stevens tomorrow, or Guarnier will fight for every second and point to win that pink jersey.
Will she do it? Will Megan Guarnier (Boels-Dolmans) bring the pink jersey home this year?
