Morton wins Tour of Utah in stunning finale

by Mark Zalewski

Lachlan Morton (Jelly Belly) rode to an impressive victory on the final stage of the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah, riding away from race leader Andrew Talansky (Cannondale-Drapac) to win the stage and reclaim the overall lead he lost two days before, winning the final overall.

The Australian won the best young rider classification in the 2013 edition of the race while riding for the WorldTour team managed by Slipstream Sports, but left the top-level of the sport after that season. He came back to racing a year later with the domestic Jelly Belly team but did not produce the same results in 2014. However, he has slowly returned to his previous form and placed second in the young rider competition in Utah in 2015.

“I have had a few pretty tough years since the last time I raced here,” said Morton. “To get to this top step is very special. There were a lot of things going through my head.”

Another impressive youngster is Adrian Costa (Axeon Hagens Berman) who also rode away from Talansky on the final stage to finish second and move up to second overall while clinching both the best young rider and the king of the mountains jerseys.

“This was pretty incredible. I have never done a race with this HC status before. Being on the podium is pretty incredible,” said Costa. “The climbs were hard, but at least you got the spectacular Utah scenery to enjoy.”
