  • FWIW, my prediction:

    1. Alejandro Valverde
    2. Wout Poels
    3. Chris Froome

Side note: I’m also interested to see how the Iranian duo Ghader Mizbani and Mirsamad Pourseyedi fare. Both have dominated lower-level Asian races in recent years and their results have more than warranted exposure to higher levels of racing …

I suspect there might be too much heat on athletes in Rio for the Iranians to ‘perform’…

Nice overview Matt. Porte’s worth an each way bet to podium I reckon. His current odds could get you a new set of wheels if he has some luck – he’s surely due for some after TdF.

Speaking of not working together, how much cooperation between Aru and Nibali do you reckon there will be?

For what it’s worth, based on the profile I suspect that final bunch will be a bit bigger than five riders (absent team tactics allowing a late escape up the road). If so, it tightens the odds for Valverde and maybe Dan Martin.

You have to like Valverde’s chances.
I’m wondering if Alaphillipe can get over the climbs and be in with a shot? Dan Martin would be the other I think.

I’ll be stuck watching the channel 7 coverage unfortunately, I’ll be lucky to see an hour or so of racing in between crosses to the pool no doubt

    • It’ll be streaming live through their app (see towards the end of the article).

Its frustrating as I cant record on my phone, but I have a recorder in my tv/foxtel. Would like to record the last few hours so I can watch on sunday morning.

Give Seven the credit they are due, full coverage with just a few breaks for brief updates from other sports and the Rugby Sevens match is as good as could possibly be hoped for from a free to air network.

  • Correction Luis Leon Sanchez is Spanish not Columbian rider

    • D Mauricio DM

The Colombian rider is Miguel Angel Lopez

      • Ah man, that’s careless of me. Thanks for picking it up.

Who is Scott Bowden? Why is he the 4th rider on the Aussie men’s team?

    • Aussie mountainbiker. The fourth spot had to be filled by somebody from within the squad already going to Rio.

      • Robert Merkel

        Hmmm.

I suppose the team pursuiters are too valuable to risk in the road race, despite having much better qualifications as standby domestiques.

        • slowK

I see – thanks Matt. Nothing against Scott, but aren’t there are more experienced roadies in the Olympic squad (perhaps Jack Bobridge, Rohan Dennis) who could pull for a bit without jeopardising their prep for the track events?

          • VerticallyCompliant

Track guys are already taking an extra rider so O’Shea can concentrate on the omnium and not have to ride team pursuit. Means we should have the freshest possible team to take on Wiggins and co.
Mathematicians at work – calculating this is our best chance at gold over sending a domestic for the road guys.
At least Bowden’s presumably hairy legs will blend in better then German track sprinter Fosterman making the London mountain bike field feel quad envy in 2012.

Rohan Dennis is already in the road squad, he’ll work for Clarke and Porte before pulling out to stay fresh for the time trial.

The team pursuit starts just a few days afterwards while the MTB is two whole weeks later, so they went for Bowden. He’s already helped out when Porte dropped his chain.

At the end of the day, Porte will have to look after himself on the tough second circuit.

I’d have thought Rory Sutherland would have been a more obvious choice

It’s clearly a ruse of some kind or other to get an extra rider in, but I’m not sure into what.

  • JessMc

Is there a preview in the works for the track events?

    • Hi Jess, probably not. We tend not to cover track events too much. We’ll have the big results in our Daily News Digest, but probably not much beyond that. We’ll be focusing our attention on the road events, and maybe the MTBing.

  • Tricky Dicky

Thanks for a good preview. I understand the c7 app will show this but do any of you techies out there know if it’s possible for a neanderthal like me to record it somehow? I’m not sure I fancy watching the last few hours between about 2-5am. A very hard race to predict, but my guess is that it will be the first rider to attack solo from a small group containing Valverde: everyone else SHOULD look to him to pull … which he won’t.

    • Good question – not sure sorry!

    • Laurens

I’m already thinking about maybe going to bed and set the alarm for around 2. Given my Tour de France performance I would be asleep when the good bit starts otherwise!

      • I’m thinking of doing similar. It’s a brutal timezone for those of us here in Aus, that’s for sure (even worse than the TDF!)

  • Jaybo

i’m curious as to how the support system works at an event like this, are there just pure neutral support vehicles only? none whatsoever? or do countries effectively carpool a support car? i can’t imagine they’d have a support car per team like a normal bike race…

    • Dave

      A car per team.

  • Dave

Richie Porte’s triathlon past is showing on each pass through the cobbles.

Scott Bowden seems to be doing a good job as the extra domestique, he’s rescued Porte twice now. Looks good for a future road career if he wants it.

    • Morten Reippuert Knudsen

he should have stayed in the pool wher he only has to concentrate on not dropping his speedo’s
