Conti wins out of long break in Vuelta

by Mark Zalewski

Stage 13 of the Vuelta was the longest of this year’s race, and with two tough climbing stages looming on the weekend, the peloton took a siesta of sorts. A large breakaway was allowed to gain upwards of twenty minutes, as no GC threats were involved. Out of the break Valerio Conti (Lampre – Merida) attacked inside the final 20km for an impressive solo win.

After the final climb of the day and certainty that the win would come from the break, the attacks began. Stéphane Rossetto (Cofidis) was the first to try at 30km to go. Jelle Wallays (Lotto Soudal) and Michael Gogl (Tinkoff) were the first to get a real gap, but were caught with 22km to go. Finally, a break stuck with Danilo Wyss (BMC), Michael Gogl (Tinkoff), Valerio Conti (Lampre – Merida), Vegard Stake Laengen (IAM Cycling), Sergey Lagutin (Katusha) and Yves Lampaert (Etixx – Quick Step).

At 18km to go Conti went solo while a chase group of Wyss, Gogl, Laengen and Lagutin tried to bring him back. But it was too little, too late as the Italian kept his eye on the prize and stayed away for the win. The rest of the group sprinted for second, with Wyss taking the second spot.

“It was a long, long day — the longest of the Vuelta and after two hard stages,” said Gogl. “I went with him at first and he’s a really strong guy. He is a really deserving winner.”

“It was a stage not for the climbers but for the attackers,” said Lampaert. “I got my exercise today trying to be in the break. In the end it was a hard final. With the big gap we could ride our own tempo. But it was still 213km so a long day in the saddle.

Michael Gallagher busted for EPO? That doesn’t sound right.

He isn’t Italian, Spanish or Russian. Pretty sure he doesn’t ride for Astana either.

If true, ban him for life.
