Froome dominates Vuelta time trial, closes gap to Quintana

by Mark Zalewski

Chris Froome (Sky) showed why he is one of the best in the business, winning the final time trial of the Vuelta a Espana by 44 seconds ahead of Jonathan Castroviejo (Movistar) and 2’16” ahead of race leader Nairo Quintana (Movistar). The result cuts the gap on the overall nearly in half, putting him only 1’21” down on the Colombian with two stages remaining.

“Of course, I’m really happy with the result today, especially at this point of the season,” said Froome. “This is the last race of my season, so I’m really happy to still be in good condition.”

Froome was the only rider to post a time under 47 minutes over the 37km route.

Alberto Contador (Tinkoff) also had a decent time trial in eighth place, moving him into third overall as Esteban Chaves (ORICA-BikeExchange) faltered, placing 24th and dropping to fourth overall, 1’11” behind Contador.

Saturday’s stage will be the last chance for Froome to unseat Qintana, with the route climbing the second cateogry mountain passes of Rates, Ebo, Tollos and Tudons, before the final climb at Aitana — an above category KOM at 21km long with almost 1300 metres of ascent.

Can we expect a sunday edition soon?

        • Probably not anytime soon I’m afraid. Except for when there’s a grand tour on, most of the racing happens on a Sunday. Any big race we’ll report any news from it right after, and most other races can wait until the Monday edition. We took the decision not to do dedicated daily coverage of the Vuelta and only put in the daily news digest (except for major news pieces or stories). Even though it’s usually an amazing race, people just aren’t all that engaged in it.

Once again Wiggo proves to be one of only a few mouth pieces in cycling that speaks logic.

Accidentally gatecrashing a race is kind of funny, but wearing replica Olympic team kit?

A guy I know managed to get onto the road unnoticed and ride through the Stirling stage finish line of the Tour Down Under wearing full FDJ kit and riding the right colour bike, even getting an encouragement from the race speaker for the spectators to cheer the FDJ rider approaching the finish. That was before the race got really popular (and security tightened) courtesy of appearances from Lord Voldemort and Cadel Evans.
