Boycott averted, 10 WorldTour teams commit to world TTT championships

by Shane Stokes

The very real risk that the UCI world time trial championships would not take place this year has been averted, with an eleventh hour agreement being reached. This will enable a scaled-down version to go ahead next month. According to a statement released by the UCI on Tuesday, discussions have led to a compromise solution which has saved the event.

At this point in time ten WorldTour teams have confirmed their participation. These are AG2R La Mondiale, Astana Pro Team, BMC Racing Team, Etixx – Quick Step, Movistar, Orica-BikeExchange, Giant – Alpecin, Katusha, LottoNL-Jumbo and Team Sky. While this means eight WorldTour squads will miss out, the UCI release states that more teams could possibly confirm their participation in the coming days.

A total of 27 teams raced last year, with several non-WorldTour teams also taking part. At this point in time it is unclear if any of the Pro Continental teams who are entitled to take part will decide not to travel. It is also unclear if the women’s TTT event will be affected.

Controversy over the championships had built up steadily for over a year, with teams and the UCI disagreeing on several points. These included compulsory participation and the lack of an appearance fee.

Under the new agreement, this compulsory participation has been waived. Teams will also be paid an amount which will go towards the costs, although CyclingTips understands that this will not cover the full expenses that teams will incur in transporting athletes, staff and equipment to Doha.

  • Just as well that the driver had ” Previous Form ” , since there appears to be NO recognition of those injured , in the ” Charges ” listed ? Had it been a community minded person , not owning up to the ” Distractions ” , would the Policing Authorities have acted ?

Howard was charged with first-degree homicide by vehicle, driving under the influence of drugs, endangering a child by driving while intoxicated, failure to maintain lane and improper use of a mobile phone while driving.

As a ” Minority of ONE ” , should i be responsible for those following me up the road ?

As the GB Olympians have written their Prime Minister , asking for more Infrastructure , WHAT , has been done here in Oz ? No doubt my request that ALL Cyclists ( People on BIKES ) should use their Social Media before the Olympics , went unheeded , yet we continue to see reports in the Media of DEATH & Serious Injury , on Oz roads .

Some of the Paralympians at Rio2016 , are there due to ROAD Traffic Incidents , even having survived collisions in their ” Hand Bikes ( eg GB / Rachel Morris ) , yet there is no sffort by keyboard warriors , to ensure THEIR OWN SAFETY , by enlisting those “High Profile Road Users ” to voice concerns for their own safety ?

Are Pro Athletes/Racers , so intimidated , that they FEAR loss of ” Sponsors ” , if they voice concerns about ” Distracted Drivers ” that they encounter as they use the roads for ” Cross Training ” , Commuting or just going to the shops ?

Does the fact that Oz is slipping behind other Nations on the ” Medal Tables ” have any relation to the fact that School Age People , are no longer RISKING a bike ride to School ?

You USE A Lot OF “Capital” LETTERS “And” Punctuation.

Hey Skip, by any chance are you related to Cormac? His brother? Cousin?

Your prose is about as easy to read and digest as Suttree or Blood Meridian.

      • Robert

Thank god it’s not just me that can’t make head or tail of this:)

    • Gregg Milligan

      He’s a negative e e cummings inverted.

  • I’ve had zero input in the Race to the Rock videos so it’s been amazing to sit back and watch the event unfold. Stellar work from filmmaker Anthony Gordon and of course from all the incredible riders. Can’t wait for the full video next month!

    • Rob

Team building challenge for the CT office next year?

      • Ha! Riding to Uluru certainly has appeal, but doing it in less than 10 days? Yeah, no thanks.

        • Dave

Sounds like a good chance to review a bike with a hidden motor.

    • marc

Jesse’s words really resonate with me, particularly the comparison about this event and life – well said young fella. And well done Sarah – you pushed yourself to the limit, and blew the field apart.

  • Dave

The WADA data leak is to be welcomed, we need more transparency rather than less.

Hand it all over the Wikileaks please.

    • david

Do you really welcome the release of private medical information? The data ‘disclosed’ showed no evidence of wrong doing by WADA or anyone else, why do you suggest it should be publicly available?

      • winkybiker

Conversely, why should it be secret?

    Re: Selig.
If my quads are in this need of a stretch I’m pretty sure my hamstrings
would be turning into square knots attempting this. Shake ’em out, whack
’em with your palm, draw less attention to yourself.?

    • MMAster

Looks like Hip flexors to me…

      • Chuck6421

A little of both maybe. But either way…
