  • Hi Matt,
The Boxing Day – New Year’s Day week is my second favorite cycling week of the year (after Radelaide!).
Our smallish local group swells in numbers as riders from Melbourne and afar bring their bikes down to the Island for some great riding on the rock and in the Bass Hills. More details at https://www.facebook.com/picyclists/
Happy Christmas and a safe 2016 to all.
    Cheers, Owen.

Adelaide has Krusty’s Ride. 200km bunch ride before lunch on Christmas Eve. I missed it this year thanks to crashing in a crit on Tuesday, but it’s one of the best rides of the year

  • Jimbob

The toolangi kinglake loop is magnificent on New Year’s Day morning

  • Glenda Maddern

I am the luckiest social rider in the world……Son (Chris Garfoot) and daughter-in-law (Kat) take me for an early Cristmas morning ride through the main streets of Brisbane every year. There are very few mobile obstacles and the atmosphere is fun and exciting…….I love it!
    Merry Christmas from Glenda

  • In Bright this Christmas and NY switching it up every day between road and MTB. It’s the only time of the year I can completely turn off and don’t have to be home or work for anything! Enjoy everyone!

Meanwhile, it’s snowing here to add to the 8 or 9 inches we have already. And it’s cold.

    • I do miss a white Christmas. But only for a few days then I’m ready to come back!

  • mv1in20

Thought I would have a white Christmas for our Belgian cyclocross trip, but it looks like 10-14 degree days will be here for awhile. Spending Christmas day at the practice session for Zolder World Cup. A few canal rides along the Schelde river so far have been something different to sweltering Adelaide.

Been on school holidays for a couple of weeks, so I did 500km last week and a nice 180km Emerald, Healesville, Kinglake return on Christmas Eve. Now it’s time to relax and forget about the bike for a few days as we do the different family and friends Christmas tours with the kids.

Xmas & Boxing Days are allocated to family. Really enjoy a Beach Road loop in Bayside Melbourne – 50 km to 130 km depending on how I feel.
Early starts are a must with the warmer weather. I find recovery days are essential to maintaining good performance & enjoyment levels ???????

No problemo with an early morning Christmas Day ride – we had a nice, friendly bunch of 12-15 in Warragul this morning! Prioritise and ye shall reap the rewards!!! #merrychristmas

Don’t buy me anything for Christmas just let me go out for 4 hours… that’s the best present.

    • claude cat

Ditto. Out by 5am and back by 7am before anyone is up, nobody else knows. Call it a secret christmas present to oneself.
Actually I was surprised how many were riding the Kew Boulie at the same time!

This year the xmas-NY is even better. I’ve left the extended family in Brisbane for 12 days of cycle touring around tasmania. So far its been awesome ?

I’ve just come back from a Tasmanian mountain biking trip with the family and we were amazed by the number of touring cyclists we saw pulling in at the campsite and on the roads. It looks like a great way to see such a beautiful state and there were so many times when commuting between destinations in the car that I wished I was riding instead. Hope it’s a great trip Tim.

Thanks Simon. Im back at work today, a real shock to the system…
I did a full lap of Tassie starting and finishing in Launceston. It definitely was a fantastic way to see the state, there are so many stunning landscapes best seen from a bike. There are also some very front and centre reminders of the Forestry and Mining history of the state. It was my first try at cycle touring, and it was solo. But I must confess that I am not too hardcore, I took minimal gear and stayed in motels/Air BnB each night. I averaged 105km per day over the two weeks and could not comprehend having to set up tents, sleep on roll out mats and possibly not have a hot shower at the end of each day. Still relatively inexpensive holiday though.

A great taste of cycle touring and easy place to do it. Now to plan the next trip :-)
