And so another edition of the Santos Tour Down Under comes to a close. In the end just two riders won stages at this year’s six-stage event: Richie Porte (two stages and the overall) and Caleb Ewan (four stages). When the finish was flat, it was Ewan who won; when it was uphill, Porte did.
In some ways it made for quite a predictable race, but every stage delivered some sort of drama and excitement. Today’s final stage, while ultimately another one for Ewan, was fascinating viewing given the battle for the overall podium. Richie Porte had the overall win sewn up, but the other steps on the podium were well and truly up for grabs.
In the end it was Esteban Chaves who finished second and Jay McCarthy who was third on a countback, after edging out Nathan Haas with bonus seconds in today’s first intermediate sprint. It was great to watch.
