Jules wins Tour de la Provence opener

Justin Jules (WB Veranclassic Aqua Protect) won the opening stage of the Tour de la Provence, the first win of the season for him and his team. The 205.9km stage ended with a field sprint on a twisting and turning finish. Jérémy Lecrocq (Roubaix Lille Métropole) and Lorrenzo Mazin (FDJ) rounded-out the podium.

“The stage was launched into orbit on the ascent of the Col de l’Espigoulier,” said Jules. “One never knows how you will react on such a hard climb. I felt that the form was there because I was able to make it into the first peloton. Then we had a race with several breaks, but everything finally regrouped and the last hour was very controlled.

“The final circuit had many turns and it was necessary to be at the front to not get trapped. I was taken care of by Sébastien Delfosse and Antoine Warnier and was in fourth position in the final corner, and 150 metres from the line I launched my sprint.

“I feel that the work done this winter is paying off. We will try to defend my leader’s jersey over the next two stages. I will take part in Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne on Sunday with confidence as I work for Roy Jans as leader.”
