FDJ’s Davide Cimolai wins opening stage at Volta Ciclista a Catalunya

by Neal Rogers

It was French sprinter against French sprinter on the opening stage of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, with FDJ’s Davide Cimolai catching and passing Nacer Bouhanni (Cofidis) in a photo finish.

Cimolai and Bouhanni proved to be freshest on a difficult day that included six categorized climbs. German national champion Andre Greipel survived the climbs, but was boxed in on the sprint and could only manage fifth.

Pre-race favorites Chris Froome (Team Sky), Alberto Contador (Trek-Segafredo), and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) finished safely in the main bunch.
