On the tails of all the exciting action in California, professional racing continues this weekend in North Carolina at the Winston-Salem Cycling Classic.
Over the course of the three-day Memorial Day weekend, professional men and women will compete in a fast-paced and challenging UCI criterium on Saturday, followed by a road race on Monday. You can watch both events live here on CyclingTips.
The Winston-Salem Cycling Classic Criterium:
UCI-sanctioned and part of the USA Cycling Pro Tour, the Winston-Salem Cycling Classic Criterium is a big attraction for this Southern town, and with $12,500 USD in prize money and UCI points on the line, the field will be stacked and the racing should be fierce.
Last year’s men’s race saw UnitedHealthcare on the podium twice with John Murphy taking the win and Ty Magner finishing in third, while Rally Cycling’s Brad Huff netted a second-place finish.
Both teams will be present again this year, and after their two stage wins at the Amgen Tour of California this month, Rally Cycling will be the team to watch.
In the women’s field, powerhouse Coryn Rivera (then UnitedHealthcare, now Team Sunweb) took the win with Rally Cycling’s Erica Allar coming in second and Australian Kimberly Wells (then Colavita Bianchi, now retired) rounded out the podium.
Allar and her Rally Cycling team will be coming back to compete for the win, but neither Rivera nor Wells will be present to defend their podium. UHC will be lining up among the stacked international field, and after their tight battle at the Women’s Tour of California, the blue team will be ones to watch.
Saturday, May 27
Women’s Pro Race begins at 5:00 p.m. EST
Men’s Pro Race begins at 6:30 p.m. EST
Winston-Salem Cycling Classic Road Race:
Upgraded to a UCI 1.1 status, the invite-only road race takes place on an 8.5 mile circuit in the city centre. An international field will travel to Winston-Salem looking for UCI points and going after the $25,000 USD prize money.
Last year’s races were won by the out-of-towners as Canadian Ryan Roth (Silber Pro Cycling) and Italian Rossella Ratto (Cylance Pro Cycling) each won their respective men’s and women’s events at the Winston Salem Cycling Classic.
After a hard-fought race, Roth won his race from a five-rider bunch ahead of Jamis’ Eric Marcotte and Rally’s Evan Huffman.
In the women’s race, Ratto escaped on the final lap to win solo ahead of the teammate Valentina Scandolara (now WM3 Pro Cycling) and Coryn Rivera.
Thirteen professional men’s teams and 22 professional women’s teams are slated to start on Monday, May 29, including top teams from the U.S., Canada, Colombia, Mexico, and New Zealand.
