One quarter of the riders in this year’s Tour de France are making their debut in the sport’s biggest race. And while the Tour is just another bike race, it’s also unlike any other sporting event on earth.

For many of these riders, a Tour debut is a dream come true… until suddenly it’s not.

For this episode of the CyclingTips podcast, our editors on the ground in France caught up with several Tour de France debutants before the race to learn about their hopes and expectations, and then again during the race to find out what the reality is like.

The results span from the incredible (best young rider and KOM jerseys) to the heartbreaking (serious and painful accidents).

This is a can’t-miss episode of the CyclingTips Podcast including interviews with Taylor Phinney and Paddy Bevin (Cannondale-Drapac), Stefan Küng (BMC Racing), Damien Howson (Orica-Scott), and Jay McCarthy (Bora-Hansgrohe).
