A place reserved for those unable to ride at the front of the pack when the roads turn up, the gruppetto is reserved for those looking to survive — a large group of riders from different teams, nursing each other through the gruelling hilly kilometres of a stage race while the climbers and GC contenders do battle up the road.

In this podcast, we spoke with current and former professionals at the 2017 Tour de France including Brian Holm, Andre Greipel, Dylan van Baarle, and Adam Hansen to hear true tales from life inside the gruppetto — how they’re formed, who controls the pace, and how they manage to sneak across the line just inside the time cut.
