I think you could even just a story on the Italians affiliated with state institutions. Not sure which way round it goes, I think Georgia Bronzini is with the Forestry department and Vale Scandolara is in the army. What does one do at the Forestry department? Maybe it was Vale’s attempt to qualify as an Australian country fireman that confused me.

I did get surprised in the past week or two to learn that Didriksen school was just high school, wow being elite world champion in high school.

we climbed the Mortirolo this year and when we got to the top, some idiot campers had left campfire embers that sparked a grass fire. there wasn’t much up top, but when we descended some forestry workers were doing something on the roadside. we managed to communicate that there was a fire on the summit. “fire, ci”. no really, it’s on fire. “fire, bene” my riding mate then produced his phone with footage of the fire – “VA FANCULO!!!!!”

I suspect in answer to your question – not much

Love this piece. You should consider making a series out of it. It really gives an insight to the riders as (real) people. Or, a piece on what former pro’s are up to now.

Don’t forget about the XC world champion Annika Langvad who just became a full fledged dentist. I recall her saying that she had a week of doing surgeries and then had to race the worldcup that weekend.

Thanks for your suggestion – we might just go after that for a follow-up on this article. SO many good stories about pro riders’ second careers!

As much as I am impressed with their athletic ability on the bike I am more impressed with their real jobs and how they juggle the two.
