Fernando Gaviria doubles up at the Tour of Guangxi, extends overall lead

NANNING, China (CT) – Fernando Gaviria (QuickStep Floors) has won his second consecutive stage at the inaugural Tour of Guangxi, sprinting to victory on the long uphill drag into Nanning.

Gaviria, racing in the red leader’s jersey after winning stage 1, jumped early on the long finishing straight and was able to hold off Max Walscheid (Sunweb) and Wouter Wippert (Cannondale) to take stage honours.

There were many breakaway attempts in the early kilometres, including one that featured eventual stage winner Gaviria. But it wasn’t until after 30km that the day’s main break stuck; a three-rider move featuring the race’s only Chinese rider, Wang Meiyin (Bahrain-Merida), points classification leader Silvan Dillier (BMC), and Jonathan Lastras (Caja Rural-Seguros).

The trio got as much as four minutes ahead before the peloton tugged on their leash and reeled them back in. Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal) tried a late solo effort after bridging to the leaders with roughly 10km to go, but the race all came back together in the closing kilometres.

“I am really happy for the win,” Gaviria said, who leads the general classification, the points classification and the best young rider classification. “In the final it was really crazy and my teammates were really strong and they moved me to the front. In the final with good legs I tried my sprint. I started the sprint really long.”
