It’s been four weeks since the 2017 Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year Awards commenced, and in that time we’ve been amazed by the quality and quantity of submissions – just check out our best of week 1, week 2 and week 3 posts from the last few weeks. Every picture entered in this competition has been a celebration of road cycling in its myriad forms, and a wonderful tribute to the life and work of the late Mark Gunter, who passed away suddenly from oesophageal cancer in 2015.
But as the year draws to a close, so too do the 2017 Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year Awards, which end on January 4th, 2018.
If you haven’t yet entered, the clock is ticking – Enter now. It’s not just an opportunity to showcase your photographic flair – you could also be sharing in some fantastic prizes, thanks to our generous sponsors – Trek Travel, Specialized, Olympus, Shimano, Silca and Stages.

- Martin Kelly – The 2017 Cyclocross Grand Prix at Fields of Joy Melbourne is a great spectator event. It seemed the only way to capture the drama on “The Hill” was to lay down in the mud and wait for the riders to make their descent. Stacey Riedel rocketed down with amazing ease and from the look on her face was loving it. Race commentator Norm Douglas and the crowd watched in awe. I left at the end of the day with clothes caked in mud looking forward to viewing the image I had caught.
- Gruffudd Pugh-Jones – Into the darkness at the summit of the Stelvio

- Alan Schacter – 2017 started off with lots of snow falling. In May 2017, Crater Lake in Oregon was still clearing out the Rim Road. Only 3 miles of the 33 mile loop was open then.

- Anthony Reeckman – Taken during The Herald Sun Tour this year,I liked the synchronisation of the Orica Scott Team’s pedal stroke.

- Chris Buonomo – Pedaling west Hwy 163 on southern Utah. In the summer of 2017 I rode my bike with a few friends from New York to Los Angeles. I took the summer off from racing and decided to make my move to the West Coast the best way I could think: on my bike. It’s a crossing many have made, but every ride is unique and its own right. Perhaps the most stunning moment was the ride into Monument Valley, a vast expanse of desert punctuated by soaring buttes weathered over millions of years. 38 days cross country
- Michael Thompson – Shipwrecked! A passing boats wake splashes up through the half submerged jetty
