Report: Dumoulin to challenge Froome at Giro d’Italia

by Shane Stokes

Closely linked to the Giro d’Italia through the RCS group, Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport has reported that defending champion Tom Dumoulin is certain to line up at the start of the 2018 Giro d’Italia. The Team Sunweb rider won the race last June but thus far has kept his intentions under wraps.

However, if La Gazzetta is correct, he will indeed be at the start in Israel and will be one of the big rivals for Team Sky’s Chris Froome. The newspaper reported this week that he will confirm his attendance in January; on Friday, it rated his chances of taking part at 100 percent, the same as Froome and Fabio Aru (UAE Team Emirates).

It had been thought that Dumoulin would favour the Tour de France but the announced route of the Giro d’Italia is likely more suited to him. At Wednesday’s race launch, he said that he already knew which of the two he would target, but refused to give details.

Dumoulin is a strong time trialist but also climbed well in last year’s race, winning the stage to Oropa and otherwise limiting his losses to Nairo Quintana. He beat the Colombian by 31 seconds, with Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) a further nine seconds back in third.

Today’s feature image is from the 7 Peaks Ride and was taken by Tim Bardsley-Smith.

Unless the Israeli’s are also issuing him with a generous starting fee, I see little reason for Dumoulin pick the Giro over the Tour. Neither course is perfectly suited to him, so then you go where you can generate the most publicity for your sponsor. Now if they’d gone through with that rumoured final stage time trial in Rome in addition to the current 44k of time trialing, it would have been a different story. But that would likely have scared off Froome.

Nice scenery in the Dartmoor thing, but the cycling aspect of it is ruined by the stupid skiddy, brakeless fixed-gear riding.

i wonder how the models felt about it, struggling on the uphills and not being able to flow down the descents. were they thinking jee I’ve really got the wrong tool for the job today.

They probably only rode 1 or 2 km for the day’s shoot anyway. No water bottles, nor even mounting bosses. No spares, no food. 1 or 2 km might be generous. Hey don’t get me wrong, I like epic ride videos as much as the next person.

        Cut off denims chaffing. Yikes.

well, at least they are wearing helmets…

I like watching something different. Tis a large melting pot, this cycling culture of ours…
Rather a bit of variability rather than Rapha and plinky plonky music on a suitably ‘epic’ ride in the rain for the hundredth time…

Not sure that video really steps from from a Rapha style, though.
