Syrian women protest harassment of female cyclists at Damascus rally

by Shane Stokes

Women in Syria who are tired of being harassed held a protest in Damascus on Friday, trying to draw attention to their treatment. Waving banners such as “I will never stop biking; you will stop harassing,” around about 300 women held a bike marathon to make their point.

“We are here for the women’s marathon and to give a message that we will not allow anyone to either harass or badmouth us because we can ride bicycles and we have no problem with that,” said 25-year-old university student Rahaf, according to Xinhua.

While women in Syria enjoy similar rights to men in terms of job opportunities, they receive harassment when riding bikes. Xinhua reports that men both make fun of them and also make inappropriate sexual comments.

Women wearing Hijab headscarves also protested at the marathon. “If they (men) saw an unveiled woman riding a bike they would verbally harass her, but if they saw a woman wearing hijab riding the bike they would look in a strange way,” said 30-year-old accountant Maha. “I want to say that we have the right of equality and our religious duties are our own business.”

“….she began using it herself in the second part of 2015. However, she migrated from this product to the other two after her voice began deepening.”

Woman takes male sex hormones and wonders why she is turning into a man.

I don’t remember reading “…. and was alarmingly surprised when her voice started deepening” ???
      where was the wonderment?

      • Wily_Quixote

        “wonders’ means
‘a desire to know something; to feel curious’

        as well as

‘a feeling of amazement and admiration, caused by something beautiful, remarkable, or unfamiliar’

        Does that help?

        • JJ

where does it state that she wondered why?

          • Wily_Quixote

            It doesn’t.
I gave her the benefit of the doubt.
If her ex can be believed and she took testosterone to the point that she displayed male sex characteristics than I posit the following two scenarios.
            1. she knew the effects of testosterone and then still proceeded to take so much that she had androgenic effects (which can be irreversible) so she is stupid.
            2. She had no idea of the androgenic effects and wondered why she developed male sex characteristics – in which case she is naive.

So, I’d prefer to think that she is naive rather than stupid but the latter is entirely possible.

This is how “Fake News” begins. Please stop interjecting your own opinion.

              • Wily_Quixote

‘Please stop interjecting your opinion’ – on an Internet forum?

You are going to be mighty busy, Internet Sherrif, tracking down all those opinions on the internet today.

Col Collective delivers again. I always finish those videos thinking, yep i need to ride that climb; just gotta make time to get over there and experience some of the brilliance for myself.

  • Great. Now there’ll be an even more brain damaged Bouhanni in field sprints

    • Spartacus

No need to include the sarcasm pointers Fabio – it’s clear from the context. Will save you a heap of time typing :)

Will there be a story on letape, even though I didn’t do it would love to hear more about these and others on this side of the globe – robbies ride, Taupo and any others. Would be nice if even guest writers or organisers sent something to get us thinking about it for next year

l’Etape seems to be a taboo here, CT was getting behind the Tour of Bright instead.
