Sunday’s Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race was the first one-day WorldTour race of the season and, ultimately, the first one-day WorldTour win of Jay McCarthy’s career. The Bora-Hansgrohe rider was in an elite lead group of nine riders that got clear on the final ascent of Challambra Crescent in suburban Geelong; a group that was caught by the chasing peloton just as it hit the line.
McCarthy had started his sprint early enough, though, and was able to bolt to a sensational victory. Elia Viviani (QuickStep Floors) was second, having bridged from the chasing peloton, while Daryl Impey (Mitchelton-Scott) was third.
Photographer Wouter Roosenboom was out in Geelong capturing all the action. Here’s a selection of his images from the day.

- Daniel Oss switched to Bora-Hansgrohe in 2018 and would prove invaluable for McCarthy towards the end of the race.
- The race starts off with Corio Bay in the background.
- The peloton climbs up towards Bells Beach.
- The finishing circuit around Geelong features a couple of steep pinches.
- The riders hit the steep slopes of Challambra Crescent four times, thinning the peloton each time.
- It came down to a sprint from a reduced group …
