2018 Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year Awards: more highlights
With just a couple of days remaining, now’s the time to enter the 2018 Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year Awards and showcase your best cycling snap. There’s a category for everyone, whether you’re a professional photographer or simply got a lucky snap on a smartphone. And for 2018, in addition to the Professional, Enthusiast and Smartphone/Action Cam categories there’s a new category. Proudest Cycling Moment allows you to enter an image showcasing your proudest moment on a bike, and to share the story behind it.
Today, we’re highlighting just some of the standouts from the second half of the competition. For the best of the first half of the competition, see here.
Over the past three years, the awards have become a highlight of our calendar at CyclingTips, allowing us a glimpse into the considerable creativity and skill of the competition’s entrants. But the awards are much more than just a photo competition – they’re a way of remembering a greatly loved Australian cycling photographer. And with all entry fees are donated to cancer research and a fund to support young cyclists, the awards are also a fundraiser for a great causes.
Entries close soon, so there’s no time to waste. Enter now.
You can follow the images being entered via our Instagram feed and the hashtag #markgunterphotoawards2018. Donations to our charity partners are welcomed, and of course, we would love to see as many people as possible enter the competition!
Professional category
- Pete Dunlop @pdittyimages: “The day after Kristina Clonan and Rebecca Wiasak won their respective categories (U23 & Elite) at the 2018 AUS National Criterium Championships, I was lucky enough to get an exclusive shoot with them all the way through Golden Hour on a secluded backroad in regional Ballarat. One of my favourite shoots I’ve ever done.”
- Jean-Pierre Ronco @imagewriterphotography: “Beautiful landscape of the Tour de France 2018. Here the leader groups, lead by the yellow jersey Greg Van Avermaet, going down hill in the valley between Annecy and Le-Grand-Bornand in the Alps. Greg Van Avermaet succeeded to save his yellow jersey for one more day.”
- Rhode Van Elsen @rhode.photo: “Paris-Roubaix 2018 – a World Champ on a mission… Peter Sagan on his road to victory.”
- Kenza Barton Schlee @kbschlee: “”Urban Adventure” This shot was taken on Leake Street in London with gravel rider Daniel Hughes. Forget KOMs and yellow jerseys, adventure is at the heart of cycling. We might not all live in the foothills of the alps but Daniel shows you can adventure anywhere.”
- Chris Auld @cauldphoto: “”This is what winning feels like, John Degenkolb takes victory, Stage 9 of Tour de France 2018.”
- Jeff Vander Stucken @jeffvsphoto: “The Red Bull Bay Climb is a grueling race up 3 of the steepest city blocks in the Potrero Hill neighborhood of San Fransisco. When I saw that someone had added “don’t” to the usual “stop” on the street I knew I had to work it into a shot. Here a racer struggles up the middle 23% grade section as the crowd encourages him to keep going.”
- Matt Ben Stone @mattbenstone: “Denise Mueller-Korenek breaking the Bicycle world land speed record traveling 184MPH.”
- Paolo Martelli @paolopennimartelli: “”lo squalo” Vincenzo Nibali, right after crossing the finish line in Milano Sanremo 2018. For me, italian, probably one of the most emotional day of the year.”
Enthusiast category
- Edward Riley @ed._riley: “I took this on stage 2 of the 2018 Tour de Yorkshire which finished on top of the Cow and Calf in my hometown of Ilkley. I think all the orange makes for a nice photo. I’ve not taken many photos from races as I’m only 16.”
- Galen Stilgebauer @galen1973: “During the Alpe d Huez stage of this years tour, my wife and cousin and I rode from the base of the Alpe to the top of the Col de la Croix de Fer and back only to then climb the iconic Alpe. Along for the ride was my camera gear which added over 15 pounds to the experience. There were many times I second guessed my decision to bring it along. We were positioned about 5K from the top. As the leaders and chasers came through, I was able to catch Egan Bernal staring down the barrel of my lens.”
- Chris Wallis @wallisphotos: “Snapping the Snappers – everyone’s part of the crowd As the Tour de France peloton winds its way through the french country side some times it only the photographers watching.”
- Adam Phelan @adamphelan: “The Man Behind The Camera. Richie Porte was man of the hour before the 2018 National Road Championships. I was down there as spectator for the first time in 7 years after racing every edition since 2011. It was set to be big year for Richie, with a good tilt towards the TdF. Luck hasn’t been on his side…yet.”
- Dean Harris @mirroredechoes: “Winners are grinners. A very happy Daryl Impey after crossing the finish line to win the 2019 Tour Down Under.”

Smartphone/action cam category
- Lorne Campbell @lorne_____: “Breakfast.”
- Laurits Fischer-Hansen @laurits_hansen: “An early morning ride to Wilsons Prom”
- Marc O’Leary @ olearymarc40: “While we may go in to an event focused reaching the finish line first, not all is lost if that doesn’t happen. In fact, pushing through unexpected obstacles and persevering because of the help of a friend makes eventually reaching that finish line even sweeter in the end. This is that friend for me, and I captured this photo of him after he sacrificed his own race result to help me fix a mechanical and reach the finish of the Gravel Grovel.”
- Tim Clairs @tclairs: “My favourite switchback, any time of the year, col de la Faucille, France.”
- Mark Geary @ogaram: “I captured Catalina Soto at DISC in Melbourne, during one of her races. I used my GoPro. The lines show a lot of movement and give the impression of speed.”
- David Man @Sailinbum: “Drifters”
- Ralph Bischoff: ”Inside View’ This picture was taken near the top of the Col du Tourmalet during stage 19 of this year’s TdF. ‘The calm before the storm’ describes the period after the caravan has passed, and the riders are about to arrive. A live TV inside one of the RVs was well appreciated by the some Tour enthusiasts, to follow the race action.”
- Jason Janetzky @allez_allez_allez: “It’s hard to not sing a version of ‘under the sea’ while cycling through this aquatic tunnel. Perth, Western Australia.”
- Shaharin Wan @wshah: “Passo Vrsic, Slovenia. Vrši? Mountain Pass with its 1,611m is the highest road pass in the Eastern Julian Alps. The high-mountain road from Kranjska Gora through Vrši? to Log in Trenta has 50 serpentines, 24 on the side of Kranjska Gora and 26 on the Trenta side.”
- Michael Wichuk @m_dub: ”Tuesday evening crit at Castrol Speedway near Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.”
Proudest Cycling moment category
- Lukáš Ronald Lukács @lucassaganronald: “I’m suffering the GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorder) for more than 2 years. I’m always so nervous and I’m losing energy so faster than before. Because of this, I had to stop studying and I’m at home now. But for some seconds I don’t feel this. When I got at the top of my dream mountain after more than hour and it took 2 times longer than before, I just lift my bicycle with the last remaining energy and I felt the freedom again. So this is my proud cycling moment, when I defetead myself.”
- Wouter Hoogenboom @bicycle.racing.pictures: “Peter is a USA Cycling Coach, Co-executive Director of the Star Track Youth Program, and proud cycling dad of Billy, an aspiring junior racer. You will find Peter roadside and trackside at races all over the country and abroad supporting riders in whatever weather Mother Nature brings. This photo – taken in subzero temperatures moments before the start of a local New York City Crit – perfectly illustrates this.”
- Craig Huffman @craigsclicks: “”I Never Gave Up…” – Just 166 days after a horrific cycling accident: 25 broken bones, serious internal injuries, 10 days in a Trauma Center and the long road of rehabilitation, an emotional Annette Williams (USA) embraces her husband Kenny following her Gold Medal performance during the UCI Masters Track Cycling World Championships, Women 55+ Scratch Race Final at the Velo Sports Center in Carson, California, USA on October 9, 2018.”
